Eremon is 14-year-old boy from the northernmost region of Kenya. Eremon has a deformity in one leg, called a "knock knee," which makes his leg angle inward and causes pain and limited mobility. A $1,000 corrective leg surgery will repair Eremon's knee and restore him to physical shape that will allow him to walk, run, and increase his balance. Khakindra is a 15-year-old boy who fractured his left arm and elbow four days ago while playing football with his friends. Khakindra's fracture is so severe that two clinics turned him away before he made it to Nyaya Health. He's already experiencing pain, swelling, and inability to move his left arm. Doctors at Nyaya say if he's not treated immediately, his injury could lead to osteoarthritis and malunion of joints. For $1045, Nyaya can provide Khakindra with surgery to repair his arm and prevent life-long disability. Khakindra's family makes a tiny income through farming for two months of the year, but relies on daily wage jobs to support them throughout the rest. The cost of the care Khakindra needs is unimaginable for them. Khakindra is in class 6 and his goal is to be a mathematics teacher. Evelyn is pregnant with her second child and is due in June! Evelyn is a 20 year-old farmer who sells maize, beans and sugar cane. Working in the field and completing daily chores is taxing on her body. Many women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Access to care before and during birth can alleviate some of these risks and avoid others completely. Lwala Community Alliance wants Evelyn and her baby to receive all the care they need. For $215, Evelyn will receive pre-natal care, a hospital delivery and a checkup after birth. When asked what her hopes for the future was, Evelyn said, “I want the delivery to go smoothly and that my children can go to school and maybe even complete university.” Spoken like a true Mom.

Five years ago, Samnang was running with his friends when he fell off a bridge and broke his hip. Since then, Samnang has not been able to walk more than 30 meters without experiencing severe pain. Without treatment, Samnang will have extremely limited mobility for the rest of his life. Luckily, surgeons at Children’s Surgical Centre can perform a hip replacement surgery to fix Samnang’s condition. They are hopeful that with surgery, Samnang will experience “reduced pain and increased mobility.” Samnang lives with his parents and two sisters. He loves riding his bike and playing volleyball, and looks forward to getting treatment so he can live an active life. Samnang dropped out of school after his accident because it was to hard for him to move around. He tries to help his parents with farming tasks, but his injury makes it difficult for him to work. Samnang means “lucky” in Khmer. We are excited for him to get the treatment he needs for his luck to turn around.

Odria is a 3-year-old girl with clubfoot, a common condition in which the foot is turned inward. Because of her condition, Odria has difficulty walking. If left untreated, it will be nearly impossible for Odria to live a normal, active life. Luckily, doctors at CURE can perform surgery to correct Odria’s condition. They are confident that with treatment, “Odria can be free of her disability for good.” Odria comes from a supportive family that is eager to see her get healthy. She was brought to the hospital by a caring uncle who has helped raise her since she was a baby. He hopes Odria can get the treatment she needs to grow up normally.

Vuthai is an 18-year-old Buddhist monk who started developing a lump on his neck five months ago. Since then, it has grown in size and he says he “feels scared and embarrassed” because the people in his village feel sorry for him. Luckily, doctors at Children’s Surgical Centre got Vuthai’s biopsy results back, and although the growth is large, it is benign. They still want to perform surgery on Vuthai to remove the growth and prevent any further distress. Vuthai’s family is very poor, and living in the pagoda allows him to live and eat for free while he’s in school. Out of respect for his family and love for his religion, Vuthai will live there for two years. He looks forward to getting this growth removed so he can go back to focusing on his studies.
