Meet Fostina! She is a sweet, ten-year-old girl from Zambia who “was nothing but healthy and brought only joy to her family” for the first six of years of her life, according to our medical partner CURE International. Then, at age six, her family began to notice a slight bow in her legs, but doctors had high hopes she would outgrow the condition. The opposite happened. Now at ten years of age, her legs are severely bowed out and far beyond the ability of her local doctor to correct. "Fostina has trouble walking," her doctors say, "which is extremely painful, awkward, and embarrassing. This also causes stress on other joints in her ankles and hips and she has experienced social difficulties due to her very noticeable disability, because her culture largely believes in curses.” Thankfully, Fostina was referred to our partner, CURE International. Fostina has already had one successful surgery, thanks to Watsi donors. She needs our help to fund her final operation. For $1000, Fostima will receive a proximal tibial osteotomy, which will correctly realign her legs. She is expected to recover fully; she will walk out pain-free and with a new source of confidence.

Meet 19-year-old Muang Htun. Muang Htun lives with his parents and nephew in Burma. Muang Htun is studying hard at Mawlamyine University to pursue his dream of becoming an engineer. Sometimes he is too tired to attend class because he has a congenital heart disease which causes extreme fatigue, shortness of breath and chest pain. Diagnosed at three-years-old, Muang Htun’s condition requires surgery in order for him to be resilient to future sickness and live a healthier, longer life. For $1,500 doctors will replace his aortic valve and pulmonary valve while repairing the ventricular septal defect in his heart. His parents have been working at a rubber plantation to support him at university, but they need our help in order to fund Muang Htun’s surgery. Let’s help get Muang Htun the care he needs!

Vichet is a 24-year-old newlywed living in Cambodia. Vichet worked as a skilled welder until an accident at work resulted in a fractured hip two years ago. Though he sought immediate treatment at a local hospital, Vichet’s hip has not healed. It's difficult for him to walk, and he's in constant pain that prevents him from working. A loving husband, Vichet wants to return to work at full capacity so that he can start saving money for his family. For $500, Vichet can receive a hip replacement surgery that will allow his hip to heal correctly. Marta is a six-year-old girl living in Guatemala who has been living with rheumatoid arthritis for the past three years. Her hands and knees are so inflamed and painful that she cannot walk or use her hands normally. It is painful for her to pick up objects like cups and spoons. Without treatment, Marta's joint damage can result in permanent disabilities, and the number of affected joints may increase. We're raising $750 so Marta can receive an emergency intervention to slow the disease and prevent permanent damage to her joints. Medical staff at our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq, will give Marta anti-inflammatory steroids immediately and transition her onto a long-term arthritis medicine. They will provide her with eye exams to rule out potential arthritis-related eye damage. Finally, they will provide ongoing, long-term follow-up care. This is Lilia, a 30-year-old mother from the Philippines. Lilia required a caesarian section to deliver her first child but, unfortunately, her scar did not heal properly, resulting in a large, painful abdominal hernia. Now pregnant again, Lilia's daily activities are hindered by her hernia, and she needs another caesarian section to ensure a safe delivery. Lilia belongs to an indigenous tribal group in the southern part of the Philippines. She and her husband work as farmers and earn about $10 a month. Due to Lilia's need for treatment, they say, "we have been knocking at doors looking for help and thank you for your compassion." Sarith is a spirited 22-year-old man who seriously injured his leg in a motorbike accident in April. Sarith has struggled to find the right medical treatment since his injury. At first, he visited a traditional healer, but he could not relieve his pain. He went to a local hospital in June and received a cast, but ended up cutting it off himself after it became unbearably hot and itchy. He is still in pain and unable to play soccer, his favorite sport. Luckily, doctors at our Cambodian medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, have found a way to help. For $400, we can give Sarith surgery to help realign the bones in his leg and outfit him with an external fixation device to keep the proper tension on the reconstructed area as it heals. Susan can't take care of her family because she's suffering from a gastric outlet obstruction, a mass that's blocking food from moving from her stomach to her intestines. As a result, Susan cannot eat solid food without vomiting. Susan is a single mother who is devoted to her children. A doctor first saw her for this condition years ago, but she couldn’t afford the surgery she needed. As a result, she lives on a liquid and mash diet. The team at AMHF says that without treatment, Susan "will waste away" from lack of nourishment. AHMF writes, “Given Susan’s inability to eat solid foods, she is constantly weak and unable to work. She hates having to borrow and feels ashamed to ask her neighbors for little things such as salt. She longs to regain her strength and get back to doing casual jobs to provide for her children.” By removing the mass, Susan’s doctors believe they can enable her to eat and live normally.
