Kuk is a 68-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. He has seven children, five grandchildren, and enjoys visiting the pagoda in his free time. One year ago, Kuk developed a cataract in each eye, causing him blurry vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Kuk learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for one hour seeking treatment. On September 2nd, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $398 procedure. "I hope that I will be able to read again and see things clearly, and also attend ceremonies at the pagoda."

Esther is an elderly lady from Kenya. Esther is a mother of 2 children whom she has struggled to raise for the past 23 years. She lost her husband in 1996 and since then has been struggling with poverty. She had to sell a small piece of land to educate her children. Esther does not have any income and relies mainly on friends and relatives. Two years ago, Esther has been experiencing persistent bleeding. She has been diagnosed with a large ovarian tumor that is suspected to be malignant. She needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $756 to fund Esther's surgery. On September 13th, she will undergo gynecological surgery at our medical partner's care center. Once recovered, Esther will be able to resume her daily activities free of pain. Esther says, “I am appealing for your kind support to help me access medical care. I hope that soon Il be free from the complications."

John is formerly a shop attendant from Kenya. He was employed as a shop attendant but since the attack, he has been dependent on well-wishers. He currently lives in a $5-a-month rent wooden house. Her aunt cares for his daily needs. John has an existing hospital bill from his initial spine surgery. John was attacked by thugs and thrown off a two floor building in 2016 suffering spine injury. He had spinal fusion done in our facility and recuperated. He however noted some swell on his back in 2019. He has an open wound is unable to work. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping John receive treatment. On August 21st, surgeons will perform a debridement and skin graft procedure. He will be able to work after recovery and the risk of sepsis will be eliminated. Now, John needs help to fund this $1,129 procedure. John says, “I am in great pain and would wish to have an ease of it”.

Marthe is a student from Haiti. She lives with her parents and three siblings in a neighborhood of Port-au-Prince. She is in seventh grade and is an excellent student. Marthe has a cardiac condition called atrial septal defect. A hole exists between the two upper chambers of her heart. Blood leaks through this hole, leaving her sick and short of breath. Marthe will fly to the United States to receive treatment. On September 9, she will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will sew a patch over the hole so that blood can no longer leak through it. Another organization, HeartGift Foundation, is contributing $17,000 to pay for surgery. Marthe's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Marthe's family overseas. She says, "I am looking forward to my surgery so that I can stop worrying about my heart!"

Meshon is a baby from Kenya. He has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of his condition, Meshon has been experiencing an increasing head circumference. Without treatment, Meshon will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $685 to cover the cost of surgery for Meshon that will treat his hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on June 24 and will drain the excess fluid from Meshon's brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve his quality of life. With proper treatment, Meshon will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young boy. “Please help my child get treated soonest possible,” says Meshon’s father.

Sieng is a first grade student from Cambodia. She likes to watch television and play with her toys, and her favorite subject in school is painting and reading. When Sieng was one year old, she received a poorly administered injection, which resulted in the contracture of her left knee. She is unable to fully straighten her leg. When Sieng learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two hours seeking treatment. On May 9, surgeons at CSC will perform a quadricepsplasty procedure of her left leg to help release the contracture and allow her to walk and bend her leg without difficulty. Now, Sieng needs help to fund this $413 procedure. Her mother says, "I hope that after surgery, my daughter will be able to move her leg normally."

Eliette is a young woman from Haiti. She lives with her husband in Port-au-Prince, and works as a customer representative for an insurance company. Eliette has a cardiac condition called rheumatic mitral stenosis. One of the four valves in her heart is too narrow to allow sufficient blood to pass through, as the result of an infection she suffered several years ago. Eliette will fly to the United States to receive treatment. On May 1, she will undergo cardiac surgery, during which surgeons will use a balloon at the tip of a catheter to stretch her valve open to a more normal size. Another organization, The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano, is contributing $28,000 to pay for surgery. Eliette's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Eliette's family overseas. She says, "I would like to thank everyone who is helping to make this life-saving surgery possible for me."

Srey Nuon is a teenager from Cambodia. Her favorite subjects to study in school are chemistry and math, and one day she hopes to become a chemistry teacher. Srey Nuon was born with scoliosis, which is progressing with age, making it difficult to sit in school for long periods, and causing a lot of discomfort. Surgery can help correct the position of her spine, and prevent further worsening of the condition. Fortunately, spinal surgery has been scheduled for March 11. Our medical partner needs help raising $1,500 to fund this procedure. Srey Nuon says, "I hope that after my surgery I will no longer have any pain and I will be able to take care of myself and sleep better."

Maureen is a baby from Kenya. She is the youngest in a family of three children. The family resides in the central region of Kenya. Maureen’s mother is employed casually as an hotelier, while he father is a subsistence farmer. Maureen has been diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition in which excess cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain and increases intracranial pressure. As a result of her condition, Maureen has been experiencing an increasing head circumference. Without treatment, Maureen will experience severe physical and developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $685 to cover the cost of surgery for Maureen that will treat her hydrocephalus. The procedure is scheduled to take place on March 7 and will drain the excess fluid from Maureen's brain. This will reduce intracranial pressure and greatly improve her quality of life. With proper treatment, Maureen will hopefully develop into a strong, healthy young girl. “I am sad to find out that my daughter has hydrocephalus. It is a good thing though that it has been discovered early enough,” says Maureen’s mother.

Aleaza is a toddler from Haiti. She lives in a neighborhood of Port-au-Prince with her mother and grandparents, and likes listening to music and playing with blocks. Aleaza was born with a condition called ventricular septal defect, in which a hole exists between two chambers of her heart. Blood flows through this hole without first passing through her lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving her sick and short of breath. To correct this condition, she will undergo open-heart surgery and a patch will be sewn into place to close the hole. Aleaza will fly to Spain to receive treatment. On February 6, she will undergo cardiac surgery. Another organization, Chain of Hope UK, is contributing $25,000 to pay for surgery. Aleaza's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Aleaza's family overseas. Her mother says, "My daughter has been very sick ever since she was born, and I am excited that her heart can finally be healed!"

Han is a 24-year-old Karen man from Burma. He is an army medic. Han was born with ventricular septal defect, a cardiac condition in which a hole exists between the two lower chambers of the heart. Blood leaks through this hole without first passing through his lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving him sick and short of breath. Han is scheduled to undergo heart surgery on February 10 to correct his condition and improve his quality of life. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to cover the total cost of Han's procedure and care. He says, “I cannot sleep at night. Before coming to BCMF I was very worried about my health condition. Now I am a bit relieved. I am looking forward to go back to my duty as a medic again when I am fully recovered.”

Pishina is a baby from Kenya. She is the youngest in a family of seven children. Pishina was born with spina bifida, a type of neural tube defect in which the spine does not properly close around the spinal cord. Without treatment, Pishina is at risk of lower-limb paralysis, infection of the exposed nervous tissue, development of tethered cord syndrome, and possible developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,097 to cover the cost of Pishina's spina bifida closure surgery. The procedure is scheduled to take place on November 2. This procedure will hopefully spare Pishina from the risks associated with her condition, instead allowing her to grow and develop along a healthy trajectory. Pishina’s mother says, “I pray that my child will be treated and not experience any health complications in the future."
