Meet Moses, a sweet three-year-old boy from Kenya, who was born with a left undescended testis. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), introduces Moses as “the last born in a family of two children. He lives with his parents and elder sister in a two-room house at his grandparents’ home. Moses’ parents inherited an acre of land where they practice mixed crop farming. Due to delayed rainfall in the region, their crops have not been doing well. They have no other source of income, so raising funds to help support Moses’ treatment has been an uphill task.” When Moses was born, his left testis was absent from the scrotal sac, which is abnormal for baby boys. It remains in his abdomen, thus increasing his risk for testicular cancer, hernia, infertility, and more. For $540, Moses will undergo a procedure in which an incision is made and the testis is brought down into the scrotum. This highly effective surgery will protect Moses from the many health risks that an undescended testis poses, and will also allow him to “have a normal and healthy life." In many ways, this treatment will protect Moses’ future and ensure an improved quality of living. “I believe it’s not too late for my son to get treated. I still have hope,” Moses’ father says.

“My family is very young and depends fully on me. I really hope Watsi will help me to be treated so that I can regain my mobility and support my family,” says George, a 31-year-old husband and father of three from Kenya. George was recently injured while playing football in his village. “As he was playing, he was hit by a teammate and got an open fracture of the fibula of his right leg,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). George was taken to a nearby hospital where the broken skin on his leg was stitched, but he could not afford the surgery he needed — an open reduction and internal fixation, or ORIF — to reposition and set the broken bone. AMHF tells us, “George is experiencing pain and difficulty in using his right leg.” Without treatment, AMHF adds, “George may be unable to use his leg, the pain will continue, and it may lead to complications like delayed healing.” $1,125 in funding covers the cost of surgery for George, as well as a 2-week hospital stay, and 10 physiotherapy sessions to aid in his recovery. AMHF explains, “We expect that after an ORIF, the bones will unite. George will be able to work and support his young family.” George adds, “I also wish to get back to playing football, which is my hobby.”

“Sreyneang works in one of the many garment factories around Cambodia," our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), tells us. "She lives alone and sends money back to her family. She enjoys listening to Khmer pop songs.” Sreyneang is 23 years old, and was sent by a neighbor to get help from CSC. “Sreyneang has had a very stiff right knee for most of her life, a result of receiving improper injections from a very young age into her quadriceps,” CSC reports. “She has serious trouble fully extending her leg.” It is also very painful for Sreyneang to walk more than a short distance. With $378 in funding, Sreyneang will receive a quadriceplasty—a corrective surgical procedure on the quadriceps muscle and tendon that releases adhesions and improves mobility. The funding will also cover medication, post-operative care, food, and a 10-day hospital stay for Sreyneang. Following surgery, CSC explains, “Sreyneang will have more mobility in her leg and will not feel pain after walking short distances.” Let’s help Sreyneang get the care she needs to live without pain.
