Meet Im, an 83-year-old married woman from Cambodia who has three sons, eleven daughters, and fifteen grandchildren. She enjoys listening to monks pray on the radio and going to the pagoda.
About one month ago, Im developed a cataract in each eye. This cloudy build up of protein in her lenses causes her blurred vision and tearing, making it very difficult for her to see things clearly or go anywhere on her own. Though this condition is relatively simple to treat with surgery, many rural Cambodians do not have access to adequate medical resources for these procedures. Without treatment, Im is at risk of completely losing her sight.
After hearing about Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) from her neighbor who had previously been treated there, Im traveled for two hours with her daughter to reach CSC for treatment. For $292, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery to remove the cloudy build-up in Im's eyes. Then they will do an intraocular lens implant to replace those cloudy lenses with new artificial ones. After this one hour procedure, Im will be able to see clearly again.
Im shares, "I hope I can see everything more clear than now so that I can easily go to the pagoda or go anywhere else outside by myself without needing to disturb another person to take care of me anymore."
