Meet Sera, a 46-year-old mother of five from Kenya. “Sera sells roasted maize and washes clothes to earn a living,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “She lives with her two youngest children who are fully dependent on her.” Sera has fibroids, which cause her severe abdominal pain. “The pain is so bad that Sera often has to miss work,” says AMHF. “She started having lower abdominal pain and back aches some time ago. When the pain became too much and over the counter medication no longer helped, Sera sought medical care.” “After a scan showed that she had fibroids and would need surgery, Sera has been working hard to raise the money needed for her treatment, but she is unable to raise enough money needed for this surgery,” says AMHF. With $800, Sera will be able to receive a total abdominal hysterectomy. The surgery will stop the pain and allow Sera to return to work and care for her family. "The pain causes me to miss work and turn down cleaning jobs,” shares Sera. “I want to be able to work well again.”

Meet Grace, a 35-year-old loving wife and mother of three. Grace is a community health worker for HIV/AIDS patients at a hospital in Kenya. “As a Community Health Worker Grace has been a ray of hope for many patients," says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. For over a year now, Grace has been experiencing spotting blood and pain. After a screening, she was determined to have early signs of cervical cancer. To prevent the spread of cancer and an early death, her doctor recommends a total abdominal hysterectomy. This surgical procedure will remove the uterus and cervix through an incision in the lower abdomen. Grace receives a monthly volunteer allowance that is insufficient to cover her basic expenses, let alone this surgery. Grace's husband is a casual electrician who relies on taking whatever electrical jobs he may find, and cannot help cover the cost. For $790, we can help Grace receive this life-saving surgery, lab work, medication, and 12 days of care in the hospital. “I love my work and hope to get well and continue working with the community,” Grace says with a smile. For three weeks, Catherine has been experiencing lower abdominal and uterine bleeding caused by noncancerous tumors, or fibroids, in Catherine's uterus. Due to the bleeding masses in her uterus, Catherine is now at risk for severe anemia. The growth of the fibroids could also affect other body organs. Catherine is a very social woman, with leadership positions in her women groups. She and her husband are farmers and depend on farm produce for their basic needs and the education of their children. Trizer and her husband work to ensure that they are able to provide for her growing family. She works hard on her farm and sells small fish, tomatoes, and onions at a local market so that she can meet her son's basic needs while her husband operates a motorbike. In her free time. Trizer likes to sleep and listen to music. As Trizer prepares for the birth of her second child, she hopes that things will go well. "I hope to be provided with a safe and successful delivery so that I will not fully depend on my husband, but will be able to work harder on my farm, expand my business and save the profit i get to secure my children's future education," she says. $290 will cover the cost of Trizer's prenatal care for the duration of her pregnancy, safe delivery of the baby in a health facility, as well as postnatal care after the baby is born.
