Rejina is six years old, and lives with her family in Nepal. She is in the first grade and enjoys reading stories and poems. Rejina recently broke her arm while playing with friends. Our medical partner, Possible, shares: “Rejina was playing on a rope swing when it broke and she landed on her right arm; it has been hurting since then. Not only did she miss her school to come to the hospital but she also needs help with her every day work like eating and dressing up.” Rejina needs to be treated soon in order to prevent long-term complications of the fracture. If left untreated, the fractured bone could lead to permanent immobility or infection. Rejina's family family cannot afford the $579 treatment she needs, which includes surgery and casting. "Prakash has been crying - I just wish he would be free of pain soon," his father told our medical partner, Possible, at Prakash's pre-operative interview. Recently, 10-year-old Prakash seriously injured his leg while playing soccer with friends. He fell in a ditch and fractured his left femur, or thigh bone—the largest bone in the body. “The area of injury looks deformed now, and there is considerable swelling,” notes his doctor. “He’s also been bedridden since the accident and is unable to move around on his own,” which could make returning to school complicated for the young boy. To soothe this pain and to be able to walk again, Prakash needs to undergo leg surgery. However, his parents, who are farmers, cannot afford the operation and aftercare on their salary. Fortunately, we can help this family make ends meet for Prakash’s operation. For $579, we can fully fund the surgical procedure he requires. “Prakash's fractured bones will be aligned correctly and secured with the help of a plate to ensure it heals well,” explains Possible. This sum will also provide Prakash with the cast, four-day hospital stay, and physical therapy he’ll need to make sure his leg recuperates fully. "It's difficult for me to see Susmita in so much pain. I wish for her treatment to happen as early as possible so that she is free of pain," her father tells our medical partner, Possible. Susmita is a nine-year-old girl who lives in Nepal with her parents and 11 siblings. Recently, an incident caused a fracture in her left hand. "Susmita was grazing her cattle when a dog chased after her. While running from the dog, she slipped and broke her left hand. Her hand has swollen and it's been painful since," Possible says. Susmita is usually a great help to her family, but lately she has "needed assistance to do basic day to day chores like bathing, dressing, and so on; she's been missing school and cannot help with chores." For $579, Susmita will undergo surgery to have her fractured bone surgically reset so that her hand can heal properly. This operation will ensure that she will regain full use of her hand, and once again be able to take care of herself and return to school.

Meet Sokhom, a 75-year-old grandpa from Cambodia with three sons, three daughters, and 19 grandchildren. Sokhom, a patient with our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), enjoys visiting the pagoda and listening to the monks pray. “Sokhom developed a cataract in each eye six months ago. This causes him blurred vision, irritation, and tearing. He can't see everything clearly, do work well, and go anywhere outside,” explains CSC. $225 funds cataract surgery that will remove the cloudy lenses from both of his eyes and replace them with artificial lenses. Funding for his surgery includes post-operative care, and after the surgery, he will be able to see clearly again. With restored vision, Sokhom looks forward to going to his farm with ease, planting vegetables, and going outside without assistance.

“I was hoping the wound would heal after some medication. Unfortunately, I've now come to a stage where my leg will have to be amputated,” says 48-year-old Krishna from Nepal. Our medical partner in Nepal, Possible, explains: “Krishna has had diabetes for a very long time. Two years ago, he developed a wound on his foot and got it treated. However, he developed another wound. Hoping it would heal on its own, Krishna did not seek medical help until the infection became severe. Now, not only does the leg hurt and Krishna needs a wheelchair to move around, but the wound gives off a stench that makes it uneasy for Krishna himself and his family to look after him." $579 funds the amputation procedure for Krishna that Krishna needs to heal. “The infection in Krishna's wound is too severe and is spreading up and above his leg. Nith, a 17-year-old girl from Cambodia, began experiencing hearing loss and discharge from both ears when she was young. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC) explains, “A cholesteatoma (benign growth) has been discovered in her left ear.” Nith shares, “When I have ear discharge and I feel pain, it disrupts my life so I stopped studying at school. I couldn’t hear my teacher. Now, I work on the farm.” Nith went to school until 9th grade, and now helps her parents tend to their farm. She enjoys reading books, helping her mother clean the house, and drawing pictures in her free time. $809 will cover the cost of the myringoplasty sugery that Nith needs to treat her condition permanently. CSC says, “After the surgery, her hearing will improve and her pain and discharge will stop.”
