James is a casual laborer who works hard to get any work he can. He is 34 years old and not yet married. He grew up as an orphan and has been brought up by his uncle, a small scale farmer with his own family. His mother died when he was very small, and his only sibling was a brother who also died about three years ago. Currently, James works picking tea at the neighbors’ farm. James was injured in an accident between a vehicle and a motorbike on 24th December 2020. He was a passerby and was hit on the left leg. Upon x-ray, he was found to have a closed fracture tibia/fibula. He was admitted to the hospital and open reduction internal fixation (ORIF) surgery was performed. Unfortunately, after about two weeks, the plate dislodged and opened the skin, and it became infected. If not treated, the infection may result in amputation of his leg. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On February 11th, James will undergo a new fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. This procedure will help him heal well and walk easily again. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,049 to fund this procedure. "I am so worried because I can only cry to my Uncle. I know he cannot pay for another surgery. I kindly ask for help so that I can be well and stop depending on others,” said James.

Kyogabirwe is a 32-year-old mother of two who came to our Medical Partner's Care Center Nyakibale hospital for her antenatal visits and doctors have advised her to deliver through a caesarian section to ensure her health and that of the baby. Kyogabirwe however is worried about the cost of this delivery. She lost her nursery teaching job when Covid-19 arrived and schools were closed. Their family's only source of income is her husband's small motorcycle business, but the income is not enough to meet the cost of living and medical cost. Kyogabirwe shared, “I will really be grateful for your support. COVID19 has really affected us financially. After I recovery from the c-section, I hope to continue with farming.”

Koem Leng is an 80-year-old vegetable farmer. She has one daughter, four sons and nine grandchildren. Twenty years ago, her husband passed away with lung cancer, so she lives with her youngest son who is a farmer. Due to her age, Koem Leng no longer works in the fields, and instead spends time at home taking care of her grandchildren. She self-describes her health as fair. In her free time, Koem Leng enjoys listening to monks preaching on the radio. Five years ago, Koem Leng developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her photophobia, blurry vision, poor night vision, and difficulty eating or drinking. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Koem Leng learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for two and a half hours with her daughter seeking treatment. On February 10th, doctors will perform phacoemulsification cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in her left eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. Koem Leng shared, "After surgery, I hope my eyes can see clearly. I look forward to going out in the sun and taking care of myself and my grandchildren."

Noel is a 3-year-old boy from Tanzania and the only child to his single mother. He is a happy, friendly, and cheerful boy. Noel's mom shared that his father left them when he was young and does not offer support, leaving her struggling to raise him all by herself. Last year, Noel fell over a pot of hot porridge which has left him with scars on his face. The skin around his face is now contracting and pulling the skin up impacting his mouth. Due to this, he can’t speak well and if this is not corrected the condition will continue to worsen. Noel's mother does not have a stable job; she seeks casual labor like house cleaning and washing clothes in order to get money to support herself and her baby. She is unable to afford her child's treatment cost thus she is asking for help and support. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Noel receive treatment. On October 12th, surgeons at their care center will perform a burn contracture release surgery and he will be better able to talk properly after treatment. Now, their family needs help to fund this $874 procedure. Noel’s mother says: “With no job, I am struggling to even feed my son well. I won’t be able to afford his surgery cost, please help us.”

Ndyamuba is an elderly man who is a farmer from western Uganda. He cultivates maize, beans and cassava for his family of six. He also has a small plantation of coffee and bananas. For about two years, Ndyamub has had a hydrocele, which is a swelling in a sensitive area, and it has recently become quite painful. After doing strenuous activities, such as cultivation or standing for a length of time, he starts to feel uncomfortable. Ndyamuba had not been to a hospital before he went to Nyakibale Hospital for a scan. After reviewing his scan, the surgeon recommended a hydrocelectomy surgery to help correct his condition. The surgery will reduce the likelihood that Ndyamuba experiences further pain. Without treatment, he will not be able to continue working. However, this procedure is costly for Ndyamuba and his family. Due to his older age, he is no longer able to cultivate his crops as much as before. His children also have limited income and are not able to support his medical fees. Ndyamuba is appealing for financial support. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $146 to fund Ndyamuba's surgery. On October 20th, he will undergo a hydrocele repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Ndyamuba shared, “The only hope I have of recovering from this condition is undergoing surgery. I hope to have a new life and resume farming after I have fully recovered.”
