Meet Emilly, a 22-year-old woman from Kenya! She lives with her hardworking husband, who works as a barber and farmer, and their firstborn child. Emilly recently found out some exciting news – she is four months pregnant with her second baby! Emilly, like all mothers, wants the best for her unborn child. “I go to church every Saturday to pray for my family. God willing, he will let me see my children grow healthy, strong, and educated up to their full potential,” Emilly tells our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance. She is hopeful that with our help, she will have access to professional prenatal care, a proper delivery at a health facility, and postnatal care for herself and her child. Emilly is excited to have her baby at the health facility, “I feel I am blessed for the first time in my life, I never knew that such wonderful people like Watsi donors exist in this world.” It will cost $290 to get Emilly the resources she needs. "John is a friendly eight-year-old-boy," AMHF tells us about this only child to his parents from Tanzania. "Despite the condition of his hands, John is very active. He likes to play soccer and running." Recently John unknowingly put his hands in boiling hot water which left him with severe burns on both of his hands. "He cannot hold things by using his left hand and it’s even difficult to hold a pencil with his right hand," AMHF writes. Clinicians have recommended a skin graft and contracture release for John right now. While both of his parents work hard to keep their family running, the cost of this treatment, $870, is not something they can cover on their own. “I wish I could use both of my hands," says John. "Sometimes people stare at me and pass comments which make me uncomfortable, but I keep going to school and I hope to become a doctor when I grow up." With spirit like that, John is sure to go far. Meet Martine, a baby girl living with her parents and two older siblings in Haiti. Her mother is a stay-at-home mom and her father works in construction. Martine was born with a heart condition called patent ductus arteriosus, “in which a hole between two parts of the heart that normally closes by itself after a baby is born, instead remains open,” our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, tells us. “As a result, blood can flow through this hole without passing through the lungs to obtain oxygen; leaving the child sickly and breathless. Without treatment, the condition can be fatal.” $1,500 covers Martine’s surgery that will repair her heart and allow her to live a long and happy life. “We are relieved to know that Martine can have this surgery – we don’t know what we would have done without this help!” share her parents.

Abelino recently began experiencing seizures. As a result, his physical development has halted. Abelino has lost the ability to walk and speak. He is also struggling with malnutrition. His parents, afraid for their son and extremely poor, have been unable to seek medical attention on his behalf. Abelino is only four years old. Zin is a 19-year-old girl who was born with a mass on the left side of her stomach. One morning in April, she woke up completely numb on her left side. Unable to move, Zin was confined to her house. She soon started experiencing headaches, heaviness in her legs, and joint pain. For an entire month, Zin relied entirely on her younger sister to take care of her. Zin’s mother had to borrow money from friends for transportation costs to take Zin to an urban clinic where she was diagnosed with a kidney cyst. Zin’s mother is very worried about her daughter's health, and about their growing hospital bills. Zin needs a $1,330 surgery to remove the cyst and restore her quality of life. Sulma is a 28-year-old woman from Guatemala who is expecting her first child. She is excited to give birth, but worried about how she will manage her type 1 diabetes during her pregnancy. Type 1 diabetes is "extremely difficult to manage in Guatemala" as it is, according to our medical partner. Her doctor says, "Although Sulma is very happy [about her pregnancy], it is also very stressful. Insulin control and glucose monitoring during pregnancy for a type 1 diabetic is medically complex and expensive, and she cannot afford to do it." Sulma needs medical oversight to ensure a safe pregnancy. After losing her mother to diabetes and watching her sister have serious complications from the disease, Sulma has been very proactive about her health and the safety of her unborn baby. But her limited financial and medical resources just can’t meet her treatment needs. Ahadi is a seven-year-old girl from Tanzania with big dreams of becoming a doctor. She endures teasing from classmates and it's hard for her to use her left hand to play games. Ahadi's mother is a hardworking primary school teacher. Her father used to work in a small factory, but the factory went bankrupt and he is now unemployed. With only her mother's salary to sustain them, the family of three isn't able to afford the $655 needed to pay for the contracture release surgery and injections Ahadi needs.
