Vayouk is a seven-year-old student from Cambodia. He lives with his uncle and grandmother in Kampong Cham province. He has one younger sister who is just two months old. She lives in Takeo province with their parents. His mother stays at home to care for the baby, while his father is employed at a construction site in the area. Vayouk is currently in second grade. At school, his favorite subject is Khmer. He loves eating ginger fried chicken, and enjoys playing soccer with his friends during his free time.
When Vayouk was one year old, he suffered burn injuries to both of his hands while playing with recently burned wood. He was taken to a public hospital in Phnom Penh, where his wounds were treated with dressings. Since then, he has developed burn scar contractures on the 4th and 5th fingers of both hands. It makes it difficult for him to fully bend or straighten those fingers, which affects how he uses his hands in daily activities.
Vayouk visited our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, to seek treatment. On May 19th, surgeons will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help him use his hands more easily for school, play, and daily activities. Now, he needs help to fund this $495 procedure.
Vayouk’s mother shared, “I hope my son will have a better future and be able to use his hand well.”
