Meet Mganga, an five-year-old boy from Tanzania. Mganga lives with his parents and three older siblings and loves playing with trains and Legos. His father works at a local restaurant and his mother sells fruit and vegetables in their village market. Mganga has bilateral clubfoot, making it difficult and painful to walk. “If not treated,” says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, “Mganga will most likely develop early osteoarthritis of the small bones and his day to day activities will be impaired due to difficulty in walking.” While Mganga’s parents can provide for the basic needs of their children, the extra cost of surgery is a challenge. His parents tell us, “We so much want Mganga to be able to walk properly like the rest of our children. We trust that by having straight feet it will be easier for him to walk and he will be happy to go to school.” $1,160 covers the cost of Mganga’s surgery, which will allow him to walk properly and reduce the risk of developing early osteoarthritis. Margaret is a hard working, 49-year-old mother from Kenya. Margaret and her husband sustain their family by working casual jobs when they can find them, but it has been difficult. Margaret has also been living with multiple uterine fibroids, which cause her heavy bleeding and constant abdominal pain. “During the period I started experiencing this condition, I had been planning to start my small business to support my family," says Margaret. If left untreated, Margaret's fibroids will continue to grow and cause more bleeding, which could ultimately lead to anemia. For $790, Margaret can have a total abdominal hysterectomy that will relieve her pain, stop the bleeding, and allow Margaret to focus on taking care of her family. This is Khut, a 68-year-old father of nine from Cambodia. Before his vision began to blur, Khut enjoyed caring for his children and riding his bicycle. Khut is experiencing mature cataracts in both of his eyes which have impaired his vision. The doctors at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, say “Khut has had blurred vision for the past two months and he can no longer read or watch TV. Khut misses being able to go anywhere on his own. His wife has to care for him - leaving little time to care for their nine children.” In order to repair Khut’s vision and prevent future blindness, he will need surgery.
