Meet Gift, a two-week-old baby boy from Kenya. Gift lives in a single-room home with his mother and two older siblings. Gift’s mother is a single mom and works hard selling merchandise to support her family. Gift was born with spina bifida and has an open mass on his back. Without treatment, the open mass is likely to get an infection. He also has an accumulation of fluid in his brain. If this goes untreated it will cause brain damage. To prevent infection and brain damage, Gift will need to undergo a spina bifida closure, a procedure his family cannot afford. “It has been quite difficult for me, but I am glad I have found a place where Gift can be treated.
