“I hope my eyes can see more clearly so I can continue to farm,” says Vorn, a 63-year-old woman from Cambodia. “I would like to be able to walk to the monks’ pagodas by myself too.”
Three months ago, Vorn developed a cataract in her right eye. A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, and is most commonly due to age-related changes. Because of this development, Vorn is now partially blind. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), explains that because of the cataract, Vorn also “experiences irritation and tearing.”
Vorn works as a rice farmer to support herself and her husband, but it has been difficult for her to do so because of her poor vision. Thus, she is in need of financial support to make her treatment possible, and traveled two hours with her niece to visit CSC.
For $150 Vorn will undergo a quick and highly effective surgery, during which a surgeon will remove the clouded lens of her right eye and replace it with an artificial implant. After the surgery, Vorn will be able to see clearly and return to work and her other daily activities.
