Seven-year-old Mesa is a first grader from Cambodia who enjoys painting and playing soccer with his friends. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), explains, “Mesa has a form of a cyst on his eyelid that makes his eyelid very inflamed. His grandmother is very worried about the future effect that it could have on her grandson.” The cyst on Mesa’s eyelid is a chalazion, which is caused by a blocked oil duct. Initial symptoms include redness and swelling of the involved eyelid, followed by the formation of a firm, painless bump that can become as large as a pea. If the chalazion is large enough, it can cause tearing of the eye or blurred vision. For a large or recurring chalazion, doctors may recommend surgery to remove the bump, as is the case for Mesa. $150 in funding will pay for the surgery that Mesa needs, as well as a two-day hospital stay and follow-up care after surgery.
