"Daudi is the 11th born in a family of twelve children," says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). "He lives with his family in the coastal region of Kenya. He was enrolled in school (class two) but dropped out of school in 2014 due to persistent headaches. In May 2015, he lost his ability to walk and he has to be assisted to move about." Daudi, a nine-year-old boy from Kenya, was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumor. "Daudi is at a high risk of intra-cranial pressure, which may cause brain damage or death," AMHF continues. "It can lead to decreased cardiac respiratory function, and eventually loss of consciousness. In addition, the tumor can also result to visual impairment if not treated and may not regain his walking ability." For $1260, Daudi can undergo a craniotomy to remove the tumor. His mother is a farmer and his father is older, and cannot work. Together they are unable to raise the funds for their son's treatment. “It has been a difficult few years watching our son lose most of his functionalities and drop out of school," shares Daudi’s mother. “Hannah was the only hope for our family. Her dream was to become a doctor so that she could help people and our family,” shares Hannah’s father. “I really hope Watsi will help her to undergo this surgery so that she can achieve her dreams.” Hannah is a pretty 14-year-old girl from Kenya who recently finished primary school. Earlier this month, on their way to the secondary school, Hannah and her mom had a tragic accident. Hannah’s mother died instantly and Hannah sustained injuries, including a fractured femur. Hannah is experiencing pain and is unable to walk. The surgeon at the hospital to which Hannah was admitted has recommended that Hannah undergo an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) surgery. “If not treated, Hannah will be unable to walk. The bones may refuse to unite if treatment is delayed for too long,” explains our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). "Hannah's family is still in shock following the death of their mother. The family had to prepare for the funeral as well as pay for Hannah's hospital admission. They are therefore not in a position to pay for this important surgery," explains AMHF. 15 year old Zuberi is almost finished with his primary education! In spite of the challenge of his genus valgus, or "knock knees," he walks to school every day. Lately, however, it has become more difficult for him to do this. Zuberi needs $500 for surgery and casting of his knees and legs. Having this surgery will help him walk normally and prevent future degenerative joint disease such as arthritis. Zuberi's parents are small farmers, and they have two younger children. Though they cannot afford his surgery, they "long for our son to walk normally." Our donations will help Zuberi complete school and make his parents' dreams come true.

Erlanda is in the second grade and loves school. She is a good student and her teachers say she has lots of potential, but she has an inguinal hernia that, if left untreated, could become strangulated and turn into a life-threatening medical issue. Strangulation occurs when the tissue inside a hernia dies and releases toxic chemicals into the blood stream. They are very dangerous, especially for people who cannot afford emergency medical care. If a hernia strangulates and the patient doesn’t receive immediate medical attention, it can be fatal. Erlanda lives in rural Haiti with her dad. He relies on his talents as a carpenter to support them, but with Haiti’s 70% unemployment rate, it’s difficult for him to find regular work. He wants his daughter to get the medical treatment she needs, but the cost of care is simply out of his reach. For $400, Living Hope Haiti can provide Erlanda with surgery to treat her hernia. Canab is an 11-year-old girl who, despite her age, has never attended school. This is because she was born with bladder exstrophy, a rare condition that causes part of her bladder to be present outside of her body. As a result, Canab is urine incontinent. She endures constant social stigma, and has been totally shunned by her peers. There’s a real risk that, without treatment, Canab will never live a normal life. Canab lives with her family in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia. Life in Somalia is not easy. The East African country has suffered more than two decades of conflict, famine, and terrorism. It’s difficult to access basic services there, let alone the kind of specialty medical care that Canab needs. Using their entire savings, Canab’s parents traveled with their daughter to neighboring Ethiopia, where they heard there was a hospital that could treat her. The family arrived at African Mission Healthcare Foundation’s facility without any money left, even for food. We need to send AMHF $1000 so they can cover the cost of Canab’s operation, as well as provide a room and food for her and her parents until she’s recovered. With surgery to close her bladder, Canab’s doctors say she will be at decreased risk for infection, and able to live a life free from social stigma.
