Sarmila is a five-year-old girl who lives with her parents and siblings. Her father is a teacher, and her mother grazes their cattle, works in the field, and looks after her young children. The yield from the field sustains their family for six months of the year. Earlier this month, Sarmila fell from the porch of her house and fractured her left elbow. Since then, she has been in pain, and her hand is swollen. She needs help with everyday tasks, such as eating and dressing. Her parents finally decided to seek medical help, bringing her to our medical partner's care center, Bayalpata Hospital. On February 20, Sarmila will be fitted with a cast to align the fracture in her elbow. The family needs help to pay for this $541 procedure. "I wish her treatment happens soon and she is relieved from pain," shares Sarmila's father.

Saorith is ten years old and in the third grade. He has three older sisters and two older brothers. He likes to draw pictures and read books in his free time. When Saorith was four years old, he developed an ear infection that spread to both ears and caused a perforation of the tympanic membrane in both ears. He was treated with ear drops, but his symptoms did not improve. Since then, he experienced ear discharge, hearing loss, pain, and buzzing in his ears. He had difficulty hearing at school, and he was in pain. Saorith's parents learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), from an NGO in Phnom Penh that specializes in hearing disabilities. The family traveled for six hours to seek treatment. On December 13, ENT surgeons at CSC performed a mastoidectomy procedure in Saorith's right ear to relieve him of his symptoms. After recovery, Saorith's hearing will improve. Now, CSC is requesting $842 in funding. "I hope the operation stops the ear discharge and gives me good hearing," says Saorith. "I want to be a doctor."

Vincent is a 44-year-old man who lives with his wife and three children—ages two through eight—in a two-room rental house in Kenya. He used to work as a city council guard—commonly called council askaris—before he broke his right lower leg in a road accident in May 2007. After the accident, Vincent underwent a plating surgery to treat his broken leg. Five years later, he noted an area of swelling on his right leg. He sought medical attention for the swelling and learned that it was a cancerous tumor. Vincent started radiotherapy sessions in March 2013 at Kenyatta National Hospital. In 2015, after receiving a total of 24 radiotherapy sessions for his leg, Vincent came to Kijabe hospital with a wound on his right leg. Doctors performed an incisional biopsy and determined that Vincent has a wound ulcer that requires a skin graft and debridement. If not treated, Vincent is at risk of a severe infection, which may result in amputation of his leg. Vincent has not been able to work since the accident in 2007. House rent and other household expenses are met by his wife, who sells vegetables at a small green grocery. Given the family's financial situation, Vincent is unable to raise the amount of money needed for the treatment. $940 pays for the surgery that Vincent needs as well as 14 days of hospital care, including meals, pain medicine, antibiotics, and lab tests. Vincent's family and friends are contributing $156 to cover additional costs associated with his care. “I want to be treated and be able to provide for my family," shares Vincent. "My medical journey has been long, and I want to be able to start helping my family as I used to do."
