Olipa is a farmer from Malawi. She recently traveled to our medical partner’s care center, Kabudula Community Hospital. Kabudula is a rural community outside of the capital city of Lilongwe. The health catchment area serves roughly 350,000 people, but the health centers and the hospital are often poorly stocked and staffed.  One of Olipa’s teeth has been causing her bothersome symptoms. Diet is an issue for dental health in Malawi, where sugarcane is prevalent. Also, there is little to no oral health education in Malawi and limited access to a dental professional. In fact, there are fewer than 20 dentists across the country. Fortunately, a visiting dentist will perform a dental extraction. A dental extraction is a simple procedure with few risks, and it will result in a significant reduction in her symptoms. Olipa is scheduled to undergo treatment on July 21. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting just $28 to fund the procedure.

Savorn is a 69-year-old grandmother of four. In her free time, she likes to listen to the monks pray at the pagoda and on the radio. Savorn developed a pterygium in each eye about ten years ago, causing her blurred vision, redness, and burning. It is difficult for her to see things clearly and go anywhere outside by herself. Seeking treatment through our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), Savorn is scheduled to undergo eye surgery to remove the pterygium from her eyes on July 12. CSC is requesting $201 to cover the total cost of her procedure and care. After her recovery, Savorn will be able to see clearly again and resume her daily activities free of pain.

Kene is a two-year-old boy from Uganda, and is an only child. In February of 2017, Kene started developing a swelling in his right scrotum, which grew and became painful over time. His aunt took him to a local clinic where the swelling was diagnosed as a hydrocele, and surgery was recommended to alleviate Kene's pain. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $185 to fund Kene's surgery to correct his condition, which is scheduled for July 5. “After surgery Kene will no longer cry at night, and will grow with good health,” Kene's aunt says.

Mary is a 2-year-old girl from Kanyashogi, a town in the hills of rural Uganda. She currently resides with her mother and her mother's family. They work as small farmers growing food for domestic use. While Mary used to love playing with other children, pediatric malnutrition has severely decreased her mobility. Due to insufficient amounts of food at home, Mary has experienced oedema (excessive build up of fluid in the body), diarrhea, weight loss, and lethargy. Mary and her family walked the 50 kilometers to our medical partner's care center, Bwindi Community Hospital, in search of treatment. Our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, is requesting $316 to fund Mary's nutritional care, which she is scheduled to receive on June 8. This covers a ten-night hospital stay, medications, and vital nutrients. “I thank the donors so much for supporting the needy like us," shares Mary's mother. By providing her with proper sustenance, Mary will hopefully be able to play and walk again with the same energy as her friends.
