Yen is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She has a son, six daughters, and twenty grandchildren. She likes to go to the local pagoda and listen to monks pray on the radio. Three years ago, Yen developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurred vision and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Yen learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On June 4, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $211 procedure. She says, "I look forward to go to the local pagoda, join in ceremonies, and take care of my grandchildren."

Then is a 70-year-old married woman who has four daughters and three sons. She likes to watch TV and look after her grandchildren in her free time. Diabetes has caused necrosis, or tissue death, in Then's left foot. She went to a hospital in Vietnam, but her symptoms did not improve. It is difficult for Then to walk, and she is in pain. The hospital referred Then to our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). She traveled four hours with her daughter to reach CSC for treatment. Surgeons at CSC will perform an amputation surgery on her left leg. Her treatment is scheduled for February 24. CSC is requesting $446 to help fund this treatment, as Then cannot afford it on her own. This procedure will help ease her pain and allow her to walk easily again.

Marie is a 62-year-old woman who lives in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. She has experienced many hardships in her life but has persevered with the love and support of friends and family. In the beginning of 2016, Marie felt a little mass on her left breast. Eventually, this lump become painful and bothersome, leading her to get biopsies at two separate hospitals—but she never received the results. Finally, she was referred to our medical partner's hospital, St. Luc Family Hospital, where she was diagnosed with breast cancer and began chemotherapy. After a few months of chemotherapy, Marie will undergo a mastectomy on March 2. This operation will remove all the breast tissue and should give Marie her health back. The treatment will cost $1,085. Marie's son, James, has been her attentive caretaker as she fights this disease. He says, “Cancer is an illness of patience and courage. Always encourage them and keep on praying."

Moreen is a 24-year-old woman and is expecting her fourth child with her husband, Medard. Because she has had a previous C-section, Moreen's doctors consider her pregnancy to be high-risk. They recommend that she receive medical attention before, during, and after labor to ensure a safe delivery. On January 24, she will begin to receive supplements and attend antenatal checkups and health education classes. She will deliver her baby in the hospital, and she will undergo a C-section if necessary. After birth, Moreen and her baby will be monitored by the hospital staff. Moreen and Medard are raising their children in a small village in the mountains of southwest Uganda. She works as a farmer, growing rice, cassava, and ground nuts for her family. Medard works as a porter and a guide for local tourists. Two of their children are in school, and one is at home with Moreen. In her free time, Moreen enjoys going to church, listening to radio programs, and visiting with her relatives. She also like to weave baskets, making her favorite patterns in black and white colors. Our medical partner, The Kellermann Foundation, is requesting $241 to fund Moreen's care. Moreen and her family are subsidizing $4 of the hospital costs. Moreen thanks the donors for their support.
