Beyanga is a small-scale farmer from Uganda. He is married with seven children. For five years, Beyanga has had an inguinal hernia. This causes him pain and is also affecting his work on the farm. Fortunately, on October 16, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Beyanga's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Beyanga says, “I hope for a better quality of life after surgery and continue farming.”

Morn is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She has one daughter, four sons, and twenty grandchildren. She likes to listen to music on the radio. A year ago, Morn developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision and photophobia. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Morn learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four hours seeking treatment. On December 7, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope I can see my grandchildren's faces after the operation."

Musa is a boy from Tanzania. He is the third in a family of four children. At just one year of age, Musa sustained severe burns on his left foot when a small kerosene lamp fell on his feet. He later developed contractures that significantly limited his function. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Musa receive treatment. On November 2, surgeons at their care center will perform a burn contracture release surgery to help him use his left foot. Now, his family needs help to fund this $832 procedure. His father says, “Help my son please we have no means of coming up with the surgical costs.”

Daneth is a girl from Cambodia. She has two brothers and two sisters. She likes to watch TV and read in her free time. She enjoys studying mathematics and wants to be a teacher when she grows up. For the past five months, Daneth has had a recurrent infection. She has difficulty hearing. Her tonsils and adenoids are enlarged, and she needs to undergo a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedure to remove the infection and allow her to breathe and sleep easily. Surgery is scheduled for December 6 and will cost $221.

Kereto is a student from Tanzania. He is the third born in a family of seven children. He helps his father look after their cattle. His parents are small-scale farmers and livestock keepers. Kereto was diagnosed with genu varus. His legs are bowed outwards at the knee. This condition is typically caused by an excessive accumulation of fluoride in the bones, which often stems from contaminated drinking water. Kereto dropped out of school at the age of twelve because he had to walk a long distance to school and his condition was too painful. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $940 to fund corrective surgery for Kereto. The procedure is scheduled to take place on October 11. Treatment will hopefully restore Kereto's mobility, allow him to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease his risk of future complications. Kereto’s father says, "My son has difficulty walking due to his condition. We tried to get him treated but the cost of the surgery was too high for us to afford. Please help us if you can.”

Sopanh is a one-year-old boy from Cambodia. He has one older brother. He likes to play with his toy cars. Sopanh has strabismus in both eyes. Strabismus is a misalignment of the eye caused by injury or dysfunction in the associated nerves and muscles. It is difficult for him to see clearly. Sopanh traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On November 1, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), will perform a corrective procedure to align his eyes. Now, Sopanh's family needs help to raise $292 to fund this procedure. His mother says, "I worry that my son's vision is failing and that he feels shy about it."

Susan is a woman from Kenya. She is a mother of three who used to be a nursery school teacher until delivering her third child. Her husband is a casual laborer, often planting trees for pay. Susan has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Without treatment, the cancer may spread to other organs. A mastectomy, a surgery to remove breast tissue, has been suggested to rid her body of breast cancer and to prevent the cancer from metastasizing. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $816 to cover the cost of a mastectomy for Susan. The procedure is scheduled to take place on October 31. After treatment, Susan will hopefully return to a cancer-free life. Susan says, “My prayer is that God will give me the strength to undertake the treatment and complete it. I want to be there for my children."

Patrick is a father of four children from Kenya. He lives with his son, who is a laborer and supports him. His other children live with their grandfather. In 2007, Patrick was in a road accident and sustained only minor injuries. However, a spinal problem emerged ten years later when his cervical spine started developing problems. He had to stop working as a driver due to the condition. He complained of back pain and numbness in his limbs. He managed the pain with pain medication but soon realized that the condition was worsening. In May, Patrick underwent an MRI. He was diagnosed with cervical myelopathy, a degenerative condition caused by spinal compression and characterized by hand clumsiness and gait imbalance. Now, he needs to undergo a spinal fusion and decompression surgery. If not treated, he risks developing total disability. Fortunately, surgery is scheduled for November 20. He needs help raising $1,500 to fund the procedure. Patrick says, “My hope is to be treated, and regain my ability to earn and provide for my children. I am really suffering and I hope to fully recover."

Siem is a young child from Ethiopia. He loves to play football, sing hymns, and listen to sermons. Siem’s family members are Eritrean refugees who came to Ethiopia two years ago and to Addis Ababa one year ago. Since birth, Siem has had an inguinal hernia. If not treated, the hernia may result in intestinal tissue twisting and blocking. Fortunately, on October 23, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $487 to fund Siem's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Siem’s father says, “We are living a tenant life. We sleep on the floor and we don’t have much of house utensils. We are suffering economically. We are always ready to move at any time. We came here with a hope of a life with rights and freedom. I was imprisoned for five years in Eritrea because of political reasons and when I got out of the prison, I found the mother of my children gone and the kids scattered in different places. I came here with a hope of starting a better life with my children.”

Khaing is a 21-year-old young man from Burma. He lives with his parents, sister, and aunt. He makes soap to sell for a living. Currently, Khaing has muscle stiffness in his legs and he cannot straighten them. He is unable to stand. Without treatment, Khaing's condition will continue to cause him discomfort and will further limit his movement. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $1,500 to cover the cost of an Achilles tendon lengthening procedure for Khaing, which is scheduled to take place on August 14. This procedure will elongate his Achilles tendon, allowing increased motion at the ankle joint. The procedure will help him to straighten his legs, stand, and complete exercises that will help him walk eventually. "I hope to go to school and learn about computers and economics. I want to help support people like me,” said Khaing.

Esimy is mother of four from Malawi. She lives with her husband and four small children. She spends her days caring for her family and playing with her children. Since August 2017, Esimy has been experiencing pelvic bleeding. She has been diagnosed with uterine fibroids. She needs to undergo a hysterectomy, a procedure in which surgeons will remove her uterus. Our medical partner, World Altering Medicine, is requesting $650 to fund Esimy's surgery. On August 21, she will undergo gynecological surgery at Nkhoma Hospital, our medical partner's care center. The requested money pays for supplies, medications, and seven nights of hospital stay. She is relieved that this program will help her, and she looks forward to getting back to her daily activities. She says, "Without this help I could do nothing, so I am very thankful for this program."

Sorng is a factory worker from Cambodia. He has two brothers and two sisters. He likes do housework in his free time. Five months ago, he was in a motor vehicle accident that caused paralysis of his left arm. He has been diagnosed with a brachial plexus injury on his left side. The brachial plexus is a nerve network that transmits signals from the spine to the shoulder, arm, and hand. Injuries to this nerve network can result in loss of function and sensation. He cannot move his arm and is in chronic pain. Sorng traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On August 8, he will undergo a brachial plexus repair surgery. After recovery, he will be able to use his arm again. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $637 to fund this procedure. He says, "I hope after the operation, I can move my arm and hand without any pain."
