Pring, a 68-year-old man from Cambodia, is married with two sons, four daughters and 18 grandchildren. Our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), explains that three years ago Pring began to notice discomfort around his eyes. When his symptoms persisted, Pring sought medical advice and was diagnosed as having a cataract in each eye. Cataracts are a clouding of the eye’s natural lens, impairing vision. As the most common cause of partial blindness, cataracts naturally continue to worsen if left untreated. For $225, Pring will undergo cataract surgery in his eyes. This operation involves removing the affected lenses and replacing them with clear, artificial implants. Cataract surgery is widely practiced and very effective—Pring will experience restored vision the day of his procedure. With improved sight, Pring--who enjoys visiting the pagoda to listen to the monks pray, reading, and taking care of his grandchildren--will be free to enjoy a more active, independent lifestyle. Pring shares, "I hope my eyes can see everything more clearly than now so I can help my family do some work at home.”

Meet Maude, a 40-year-old mother of four who lives in Haiti. Maude has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Her condition has become so painful that Maude can no longer care for herself or perform normal household duties. Maude used to be a nurse but was forced to leave her job during a difficult pregnancy. She then worked hard, selling goods on the street to support her family. Because of her condition, she is now unemployed. She says, “I am looking forward to the success of this surgery so that I can have my physical and mental strength back to return to my previous activities and do the best I can to take care of my family.” Let’s work together to raise $1,500 for Maude’s chemotherapy and surgery. Sylvia is a 12-year-old girl who lives with her aunt in Kenya. Sylvia has a dislocated left elbow which makes it difficult for her to use her arm. If her elbow is not operated on, Sylvia could lose function of her entire arm. Sylvia's mother passed away from chronic illness when Sylvia was less than two-years-old. Sylvia's aunt works as a house maid, but she barely makes enough money to take care of Sylvia, let alone pay her expensive medical bills. If we can raise $1200, Sylvia will receive elbow reconstruction surgery. This surgery will make it possible for Sylvia to regain full range of motion in her elbow joint and use her arm properly. Sylvia dreams of becoming a doctor when she grows up and this surgery will allow her to work towards this goal.
