Bildad is a 24-year-old man from Kenya. He lives in a rental house with his wife and child. Bildad's younger siblings are in school, and he helps to pay their school fees. He earns a living selling khat plant in his village, while his wife works as a laundress. In early December, Bildad fell from a moving vehicle and fractured his mandible. He was brought to our medical partner's hospital, AIC Kijabe Hospital, to receive first aid and undergo an x-ray. On December 16, he underwent an open reduction internal fixation procedure to mend his jaw. This treatment lowered his risk of continuing pain or other complications. Bildad cannot afford healthcare, so he needs our help to fund this $640 treatment. “I want to be well and continue providing for my family," he shares.

Angel is a 6-day-old baby with spina bifida, a rare birth defect where the spinal column does not close all the way. Angel's condition is causing fluid to leak onto her back. Her parents are worried that if she is not treated soon she may face infections, tethered cord, or even paralysis. Angel's mother is a stay at home mom who has hopes for the future: "We all have big dreams for our children. Mine is a big one. I will mentor Angel to be a doctor and that is my prayer." Angel's father does not have a steady job and works on tasks that come up in the community. This has caused Angel's parents to fear they cannot fund the healthcare Angel needs to be better. However, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) can treat Angel along with the help from Watsi donors. For $805, AMHF will treat Angel to reduce the risk of infections as well as the development of the tethered cord. "My only plea for now is that she gets treatment and grows up naturally" says Angel's mother.

"Daudi is the 11th born in a family of twelve children," says our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). "He lives with his family in the coastal region of Kenya. He was enrolled in school (class two) but dropped out of school in 2014 due to persistent headaches. In May 2015, he lost his ability to walk and he has to be assisted to move about." Daudi, a nine-year-old boy from Kenya, was subsequently diagnosed with a brain tumor. "Daudi is at a high risk of intra-cranial pressure, which may cause brain damage or death," AMHF continues. "It can lead to decreased cardiac respiratory function, and eventually loss of consciousness. In addition, the tumor can also result to visual impairment if not treated and may not regain his walking ability." For $1260, Daudi can undergo a craniotomy to remove the tumor. His mother is a farmer and his father is older, and cannot work. Together they are unable to raise the funds for their son's treatment. “It has been a difficult few years watching our son lose most of his functionalities and drop out of school," shares Daudi’s mother. "I pray that he gets well." Let's support Daudi and his family, and help this young boy heal.

Meet Channy, an 11-year old fifth-grader who lives in Cambodia. Channy lost both of her parents when she was younger, and is now supported by a local NGO. “For the last three years Channy has had discharge from both of her ears along with perforated tympanic membrane [ear drums] in both ears as well,” reports our medical partner Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC). “She has a little hearing loss in her left ear but it is much worse in the right ear, which is the ear she will have an operation on.” As a result, she has a tough time hearing people, and it makes her schooling particularly difficult, as she can’t hear her teachers in class. For $400, Channy will have a myringoplasty surgery that will stop the discharge in her right ear, and will improve her hearing significantly. Let’s work together to make it happen!

“Phorn has had blurred vision for the past three months because of the hypermature cataracts in both of her eyes,” says our Cambodian medical partner, Children’s Surgical Center. Phorn is a 70-year-old grandmother from Cambodia with four children and eight grandchildren. “This makes it hard for her to conduct daily tasks and she relies on her daughter to care for her. Phorn’s eyes also are painful and often tear.” A simple $150 surgery can fix Phorn’s cataracts, allowing her to have clear vision and do her daily tasks once again. “She said she is most excited to be able to care for her grandchildren,” CSC reports.
