Sadvin is a 5th grade student from Cambodia. She has seven sisters, and enjoys reading books in her spare time. Five years ago, Sadvin had an ear infection. This infection caused the tympanic membrane, or the ear drum, in her left ear to perforate. For this reason, Sadvin experiences hearing loss, discharge, itchiness, and headaches. She cannot hear others clearly and has a difficult time communicating well with others. Sadvin traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On October 10, she will undergo a myringoplasty procedure in her left ear. During this procedure, surgeons will close the perforation. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $423 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. Sadvin's mother said, "I hope that my daughter will feel better and that she can return to her studies and be able to hear again."

Leah is a child from Tanzania. She is the first born child in her small family, she a playful and curious little girl. Leah’s mother is a stay home mother and her father works as a casual labor. Leah was diagnosed with left genu varus. Her left leg is bowed outward. This condition is typically caused by an excessive accumulation of fluoride in the bones, which often stems from contaminated drinking water. As a result, she has difficulty walking. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare, is requesting $940 to fund corrective surgery for Leah. The procedure is scheduled to take place on September 13th. Treatment will hopefully restore Leah's mobility, allow her to participate in a variety of activities, and greatly decrease her risk of future complications. Leah’s mother say, “Please help my daughter get this treatment so he is able to walk without pain or difficulty.”

Kyaw Myat is a five-year-old boy from Burma. He lives with his family in a village in Sagaing Division. Kyaw Myat’s father is a subsistence farmer and sometimes he also works as a day laborer on other villagers’ farms. His mother is a homemaker and takes care of Kyaw Myat’s brother at home. Kyaw Myat received a shunt, throught the help of Watsi, for his hydrocephalus. Because he was also diagnosed with an abnormal growth in his head, and the mass is putting pressure on an artery in his head, it affected his ability to walk properly. Currently, Kyaw Myat cannot walk properly and sometimes, he complains that he has a headache and watery eyes. Doctors want Kyaw Myat to undergo a CT scan, a procedure in which x-ray images taken from several angles are combined to produce cross-sectional images of the body. This scan will hopefully help doctors diagnose his condition and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $469 to cover the cost of Kyaw Myat's CT scan and care, scheduled for August 23. Kyaw Myat father said, "I was told that they want a CT scan to check my son's condition. I am very worried because they just asked for it before surgery and I am afraid there might be a bad outcome."

Gerald is a man from Kenya. Three months ago, Gerald fell into a construction ditch. He sustained a traumatic left tibia fibula fracture. He is not able to walk without support and is in pain. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner can help. On August 3, Gerald will undergo a fracture repair procedure, called an open reduction and internal fixation. This procedure will help him walk easily again. Now, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $968 to fund this procedure. Gerald says, “If I could be walking now I could be looking for work. I have faith that I will walk again."

Soy is a 56-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has four children and four grandchildren, and she enjoys looking after her grandchildren, cooking for her family, and watching television in her free time. Seven years ago, Soy started experiencing hip pain on her left side. She cannot extend her leg normally, and also experiences pain in her neck as well. Fortunately, Soy learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre. At CSC, surgeons can perform a total hip replacement to relieve Soy of her pain and allow her to walk easily. Treatment is scheduled for July 2, and Soy needs help raising $1,025 to pay for this procedure. She says, "I hope that after my operation I will be able to walk normally and return to my work without any difficulty."

Khat is a 70-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. She has seven children and seven grandchildren, and enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio in her free time. One year ago, Khat developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision and headaches. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Khat learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On June 3, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope that after my operation, I will be able to see again and can join in the ceremonies at the pagoda."

Soksomaly is a 19-year-old college student from Cambodia. She is a hotel and tourism student and hopes to become a translator in the future. Five years ago, Soksomaly had an ear infection. This infection caused a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. For this reason, Soksomaly experiences headaches, hearing loss, discharge, and itchiness. It is difficult for her to hear, and she often experiences difficulty communicating with others. Soksomaly traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On May 3, she will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in her left ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $842 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. She says, "I hope that this operation will allow me to hear properly and for the infection and discharge to stop."

Tol is a 48-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia. He enjoys watching television, listening to the radio, and helping his wife with the housework. Four months ago, Tol was in a severe motorcycle accident that caused a fracture is his left leg. He is unable to walk or work and suffers from consistent pain in his leg. Fortunately, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, can help. On March 5, Tol will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $430. The surgery will allow Tol to walk normally again and no longer have any pain. He says, "I hope that after my surgery is complete, I will be able to go back to work and walk normally again."
