Kem is a street food vendor from Cambodia. He has four sons, eight daughters, and 25 grandchildren. He enjoys spending time with monks and teaching his grandchildren. One year ago, Kem developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him blurry vision, tearing, and photophobia. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Kem learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for seven hours seeking treatment. On September 3, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $211 procedure. He says, "I hope I can see everything clearly so I can continue my work as seller again and go outside on my own."

Musinguzi is a prison officer from Uganda. He is married and a father of two children. For 15 years, Musinguzi has had an inguinal hernia. This hernia causes him weakness and pain and is preventing his ability to work. Fortunately, on September 19, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $249 to fund Musinguzi's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably. He says, "After surgery I will resume working as a prison officer.”

Blessing is a 17-month-old baby girl from Kenya. She lives with her mother and grandparents, all of whom work as subsistence farmers. At her young age, Blessing is just learning to talk and recently said "mama" for the first time. Benchmarks like these have brought a mixture of emotions to Blessing's mother, who is concerned about the deteriorating condition of her baby. Since she was six months old, Blessing has been living with a condition known as hydrocephalus. With this condition, excess fluid builds up in the skull and causes the brain to swell. Blessing's family first noticed the rapidly growing circumference of Blessing's head, and they then grew increasingly alarmed as they observed that she could not walk, sit, or hold up her head the same way that other babies her age could. If untreated, Blessing’s condition could lead to permanent brain damage, loss of vision, and even death. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is therefore requesting $685 to fund the surgical insertion of a shunt in Blessing's brain. The shunt is scheduled to be implanted on June 29 and will hopefully allow Blessing to continue reaching positive developmental milestones. “I am glad you can help Blessing get better and have a healthy life,” says Blessing’s mother.

Poe is a 34-year-old man from Burma. He works as a border security guard and protects the Burmese border. While on the way to get a haircut, Poe hit a patch of loose gravel and was thrown off his bike. Poe landed on the side of the road and was knocked unconscious. When Poe woke up after the accident, he knew that his leg was broken. He was unable to stand, and a passerby helped him get to our medical partner's care center, Mae Sot Hospital, for an X-ray. The X-ray showed displaced fractures to the tibia and fibula of his right leg. The X-rays revealed that Poe will need surgery to fix the fractures. On January 27, Poe will undergo an internal fixation procedure to mend his broken bones. He needs help to fund this $1,500 procedure. "Thank you for helping me. I hope I will recover from this very soon so that I can play cane ball with my friends," he says.

Asaba is a 26 years old married man from Uganda. He is a father of two; a seven-year-old girl and a four-year-old boy. He works as a hawker (a person who travels around selling goods), but now he has no job due to his hernia. Asaba is most happy when he is with his wife and children. Asaba had a right inguinal hernia in 2011. Four years later he developed swelling in the same area. The swelling is big and very painful after meals. At night he doesn’t sleep well because of pain. Due to the pain, Asaba is unable to lift heavy items or to do any straining. He is unable to pay for his surgery to repair the hernia. If not treated, the hernia (part of the intestine protrudes through the inner groin) could become become stuck, leading to damage to the intestine or even the stomach. $249 will cover the costs of the surgery and care Asaba needs. Asaba shared, “After surgery I hope to do farming in order to get more money to support my family.”
