23-year-old Katusabe from Uganda juggles many responsibilities at once. She is a business woman, as “she deals in fresh fruits which she takes to the market twice a week,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Additionally, she is the mother of two young children (ages seven and three) and is currently pregnant with her third and fourth. Given her history of a past miscarriage, as well as two previous C-sections, her current pregnancy of twins puts her at risk. “Katusabe could go into labor spontaneously and experience a ruptured uterus,” explains AMHF. Although Katusabe’s business and her husband’s seasonal income from small scale farming provide enough for their family needs and school fees, Katusabe has not been able to go to the market since June due to her pregnancy. “Her feet are swollen; she feels heavy and she cannot get out of bed by herself,” reports AMHF. “Someone has to help lift her up." “My husband and I have very little income and currently I am not earning anything because I cannot go to the market,” explains Katusabe, “Your help will save my life and the lives of my babies.” With $270, Katusabe will give birth to her twins safely through an elective C-section, a procedure in which doctors will make incisions in Katusabe's abdomen and uterus to deliver her babies. Funding will also cover all necessary labs, imaging and medication, along with an eight-day hospital stay. After the surgery, Katusabe will be able to recover and resume her business so she can continue supporting her family.
