Henry is a student from Uganda. Henry came to our facility complaining of a painful swell on his inguinal area. this has been the case for nine years. He says that due to persistent pain, he is usually affected psychologically and so are his academic assignments. He was previously seen in a different hospital where herniorrhaphy was recommended. However, there was no surgeon in the facility and he could not afford cost in the private hospital. He came to our facility since the swell was worsening by the day. He requires the surgery and appeals for financial assistance. Henry is in school together with his sister courtesy of an academic scholarship. His mother is terminally ill, suffering from breast cancer. The father passed on in 2015. The family is frustrated and financially strained. Henry appeals for financial assistance. Fortunately, on December 03, he will undergo hernia repair surgery at our medical partner's care center. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $219 to fund Henry's surgery. Once completed, this procedure will hopefully allow him to live more comfortably and confidently. Henry says, “I hope to get well soon after surgery and go on with my education.”

Turyatemba is a bar attendant from Uganda. He is a widower who lost his wife in 2004 and has never married again. He focused his time on the two children he had with his wife. Turyetemba feared that he could bring them a stepmother who would mistreat them. All his children are studying at institute level and he has been able to pay for their school fees through operating a small bar to earn a living. Turyatemba presented with a progressively painful lateral swelling for over a period of 10 years. He feels discomfort and he is not able to sleep on his side. Turyatemba traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On April 7th, surgeons will remove the mass. Now, Turyatemba needs help to raise $187 to fund this procedure. Turyetemba says, “I hope to get fine after I have fully recovered.”

Maxwell is a two-year-old boy from Kenya. Maxwell’s mother works casually in construction sites. His father left them when he learned of his son’s condition. Maxwell is an only child and lives with his mother in a single-rental house in Kiharo Village in Central Kenya. Maxwell was born with hypospadias, a congenital abnormality that causes urinary dysfunction. Without treatment, he will continue to experience uncomfortable symptoms and will be at risk of infertility. Fortunately, Maxwell is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on February 25th. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $700 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. “Life is very tough. I earn very little from helping out on construction sites and it cannot cater for the surgery my son needs. Please help me,” says Maxwell’s mother.

Shadia is a four-day-old baby from Tanzania. She is the youngest in a family of two children. Shadia's mother is a housewife, while her father sells vegetables at the market. Shadia was born with spina bifida, a type of neural tube defect in which the spine does not properly close around the spinal cord. Without treatment, Shadia is at risk of lower-limb paralysis, infection of the exposed nervous tissue, development of tethered cord syndrome, and possible developmental delays. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $966 to cover the cost of Shadia's spina bifida closure surgery. The procedure is scheduled to take place on July 20. This procedure will hopefully spare Shadia from the risks associated with her condition, instead allowing her to grow and develop along a healthy trajectory. Shadia’s mother says, “Help our baby get the needed surgery. We have no means to afford the surgery.”

Leng is a man from Cambodia. He has a son, three daughters, and six grandchildren. He likes to do housework in his free time. A month and a half ago, Leng was in a motor vehicle accident that resulted in neurolysis of the tibial nerve of his left leg. He is in chronic pain and cannot walk. Leng needs to undergo a nerve procedure to get rid of the pain and allow him to walk again. Surgery is scheduled for July 17 and will cost $497. He says, "I hope after the operation I am better and can walk without pain."

Dorcus is a student from Tanzania. She is the oldest child in a family of two children. Her father is a subsistence farmer, while her mother is a parish worker. Recently, Dorcus has been experiencing trouble breathing and eating and regular sleep apnea. She was recently diagnosed with enlarged tonsils, which, if not treated, will cause her symptoms to persist and possibly intensify over time. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $633 to fund a tonsillectomy for Dorcus, which is scheduled to take place on June 28. Surgeons will remove her tonsils, hopefully relieving Dorcus of her symptoms and helping her live more comfortably. Dorcus’s father says, “I want my daughter to be able to go to school without being sick regularly.”

Sarin is a rice farmer from Cambodia. He has three daughters, four sons, and fifteen grandchildren. He likes to watch news on the radio and boxing matches. Three years ago, Sarin developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him irritation, photophobia, and blurred vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Sarin learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, he traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On June 14, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $211 procedure. He says, "I hope I can see well so I can go outside and recognize my relatives faces again."

Charawi is a seven-year-old student from Thailand. She lives with her parents and a 15-year-old sister in Air Ko San Kamluang Village, Pang Ma Pha District of Mae Hong Son Province. Charawi is a happy girl who loves to play with friends when she has spare time. She loves to sing and dance. When Charawi was a six-year-old, her left knee and thigh got swollen. Her parents took her to Pang Ma Pha Hospital, and doctors referred her case to Srisawan Hospital in the town of Mae Hong Son. Doctors from Srisawan Hospital performed an x-ray and ultrasound and gave her some injections. After spending four nights at the hospital, she was discharged and was asked to come back for two more follow-up appointments. However, Charawi’s condition did not get better. Doctors want Charawi to undergo an MRI, an imaging procedure that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to produce images of bodily organs. This scan will hopefully help doctors diagnose her condition and formulate an appropriate treatment plan. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, is requesting $814 to cover the cost of Charawi's MRI and care, scheduled for July 23. Charawi says, “I want to be a medical doctor when I grow up. I want to work in the medical field because I want to treat other patients."

Brahim is a young farmer from Cambodia. He has a brother and five sisters. He likes to tend to the farm and spend time at home. For the past 13 years, Brahim had an ear infection. This infection caused a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. For this reason, Brahim experiences hearing loss, ear discharge, and tinnitus. It is difficult for him to hear, and he is often uncomfortable from the ear discharge. Brahim traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On June 11, he will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in his left ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $842 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. He says, "I really hope the infection goes away and I can hear clearly again."
