Toem is a 55-year-old taxi driver from Cambodia. He has five children and enjoys watching boxing and soccer on television. One year ago, Toem had an ear infection. This infection caused a cholesteatoma, or an abnormal skin growth, to develop in the middle ear behind the ear drum. For this reason, Toem experiences hearing loss, pain, tinnitus, ear discharge, headaches, and vertigo. He has a difficult time communicating and understanding others. Toem traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On July 8, he will undergo a mastoidectomy procedure in his right ear. During this procedure, ENT surgeons will remove the cholesteatoma. Our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, is requesting $842 to fund this procedure. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care. He says, "I hope that after my surgery my hearing and will improve and all my other symptoms will go away."

Sok is a 63-year-old mother of five from Cambodia. She has three daughters and two sons, and enjoys watching the news on television in her spare time. One year ago, Sok developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision, tearing, and irritation. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Sok learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for half an hour seeking treatment. On July 10, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $211 procedure. She says, "I hope that I will be able to see clearly and recognize others, as well as go anywhere outside all on my own."

Sarey is a 68-year-old teacher from Cambodia. She has one son, two grandchildren, and enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio. One month ago, Sarey developed a cataract in each eye, causing her blurry vision. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Sarey learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for four and a half hours seeking treatment. On August 5, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in each eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $398 procedure. She says, "I hope that after surgery I will be able to recognize people's faces and can cook for my family again."

U Kaung is a 52-year-old man from Thailand. He is originally from Mon State, Burma. In his free time, U Kaung likes to forage for vegetables and cut firewood. On the 6th of September 2019, U Kaung went to visit his friend on his bicycle. The road was slippery, and his bike slid, causing him to fall off his bike and break his lower left leg. Currently, U Kaung suffers from a sharp pain in his left leg, which is also swollen. Even though he is taking painkillers, the pain is not alleviated. He cannot walk or place any weight onto his left leg. Presently, he has to use a wheelchair whenever he needs to use the toilet. With the help of our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, U Kaung will undergo surgery to reset his fractured bones and ensure proper healing. The procedure is scheduled for September 17 and will cost $1,500. This procedure will help him walk again and relieve him on the pain. "When I recover fully, I will continue to stay at home and do all the housework," said U Kaung.

John is a student from Haiti. He lives with his parents and three siblings in a coastal city in northwest Haiti. He is about to start the second grade. John has a cardiac condition called Tetralogy of Fallot. This condition involves several related defects including a hole between the two lower chambers of the heart, and a muscular blockage of one of the valves. These defects prevent his body from getting the oxygen it needs. John will fly to Cayman Islands to receive treatment. On September 12, he will undergo cardiac surgery, during which Surgeons will close the hole in his heart with a patch, and remove the muscular blockage from his valve.. Another organization, Have a Heart Cayman, is contributing $15000.0 to pay for surgery. John's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany John's family overseas. From John's father: "We are hopeful that our son will be able to live more normally once his surgery is over."
