"Mary moved from her rural home of Muranga to Nairobi to seek a better life," shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). "Mary now earns her living by selling vegetables in the market. She has three children who depend on her. Whatever Mary makes, it is only enough to meet the family's basic needs." 48-year-old Mary was recently diagnosed with cervical cancer. After experiencing irregular bleeding and discharge, she went to the hospital to seek care, but "she could not meet the cost of this treatment," says AMHF. Mary was referred to Watsi -- and fortunately, we can help. For $790, Mary will receive a total abdominal hysterectomy to remove her uterus and cervix, and treat the cancer. "We expect after treatment, the cancer spread will be halted. Mary can be well again to care for her children," adds AMHF.

Patrice is the youngest of six brothers and sisters who love him very much. His father is not a part of Patrice’s life. His mother, who is a good cook, sells home-baked goods to support the family. Patrice lives with Hirschprung’s disease. His intestinal tract is partially blocked, and as a result he is often not hungry and it is hard for him to use the restroom. “I pray that my son will get the right treatment and grow up like the rest of my children,” says Patrice’s mother. For $1,300, Patrice will receive surgery to remove the blocked part of his colon and attach the non-blocked part to his anus. When Peterson was three months old, he began showing symptoms of hydrocephalus. He has excess fluid in his brain, which makes his head swollen and places excess pressure on his nerves and the blood vessels in his brain. Peterson now has seizures that keep him from easily moving his hands. This six-month-old little boy hails from the countryside of Haiti. His mother looks after him and his siblings while also attending school. She cannot afford the $1,260 procedure that could save her son's life. With our support, Peterson will receive surgery to drain the excess fluid from his brain. His seizures will occur less frequently, or stop altogether. Stephanie is a smart 12-year-old from Kenya who loves to write and wants to be an author when she grows up. Several years ago, Stephanie's parents passed away, leaving her and her two siblings to live with their aunt and uncle in Kenya. Because of this, family has been very important to Stephanie and she would like to be able to have a family of her own someday. Stephanie was born with internal female reproductive organs and ambiguous genitalia. In order for Stephanie to be able to conceive when she is of childbearing age, she will require a genital operation so that she can give birth. Stephanie's family is very supportive of her health needs and has raised what money they can for her medical care but they cannot afford the cost of this surgery. For $1500, Stephanie will receive a vaginoplasty. This operation will allow Stephanie to feel comfortable with herself and pursue her dreams of becoming an author and, someday, a mother.
