Kakrona is a one-year-old boy from Cambodia. He lives with his parents, who are farmers, as well as his older brother and sister. His parents take their children for walks everyday, and Kakrona already likes to say hello to all his friends nearby. At home, he likes to draw pictures and watch TV. Since he was born, Kakrona has had amniotic band syndrome, which causes contractures in hands and feet, as well as swelling of his ankle joint. Kakrona's ankle has contracted, and it is difficult for him to walk or use his foot. Luckily, surgeons at our Medical Partner Children's Surgical Centre can perform a contracture release procedure, which will allow him to gain range of movement in his foot. Kakrona's mother said, "I am so happy that my son has a chance to get this surgery. I hope that after this he can start walking and grow up well."

Sensokha is a 69-year-old retired public school teacher from Cambodia. Sensokha was married for 50 years and shared a son and daughter with her husband. Unfortunately, ten years ago her son was killed in a motorcycle robbery. In the past three months she also lost her daughter and husband to heart disease and hypertension, respectively. Now she lives alone and her neighbors help take care of her. Three months ago she was in a bicycle accident. Sensokha fell off while riding and fractured her right ankle. First she sought treatment from a local Khmer healer but their traditional methods were not effective. Later, from another clinic, she received a painkiller injection which made her feel better briefly but her condition did not improve. It is painful for her to walk and difficult to go about her life. When Sensokha learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On June 1st, surgeons at CSC will perform internal fixation of her ankle joint with a pin. Once the fracture heals after surgery she will be able to walk again without pain. Now, Sensokha needs help to fund this $518 procedure. Sensokha says, "I hope my ankle will be better so I can do more things on my own and not be in so much pain."

Puthi is an eight-year-old boy from Cambodia. He's a student in 3rd grade and enjoys reading books. His father is a chef and his mother sells items at the local market. Puthi has one younger brother who he enjoys playing football with. In July 2020, Puthi had a relentless nosebleed. His family sought medical help and the only solution was continually packing Puthi's nose with gauze. This stopped the bleeding but a piece of gauze was left inside the nose and two days later the area began swelling from his nose to his left eye. He was referred to a government hospital to rule out a blood disease. He underwent surgery to remove the gauze, and testing ruled out blood diseases but the left side of his face is still very swollen. When Puthi's family learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, they traveled there hoping for treatment. On December 7th, surgeons at CSC will perform a debridement procedure to treat his nose and lower eyelid. Now, Puthi's family needs help to fund this $273 procedure. They are hopeful that he will be better soon.

Oudam is a 10-year-old student. He is in the third grade at school, and loves to study writing. He lives with his parents and his younger sister. Since his parents separated a few months ago, his mother has been working hard at a factory to support her children. Oudam helps to take care of his sister. They learn and play together. Since he was young, Oudam has suffered from muscle spasms in his legs, causing him to put all of his weight on his toes. This has affected his ability to move his legs normally, and he has difficulty walking, running, riding a bike, or wearing shoes. His mother often has to take him to school on her bike. Luckily, his neighbor told him about Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). He traveled nine hours with his mother to receive treatment. Doctors will perform an achilles tendon lengthening procedure. This will allow him to distribute weight across his whole foot, giving him greater balance and ease of walking. After a physiotherapy program, Oudan will be able to walk normally. Oudan's mother shared, "I am happy we have the opportunity for this procedure and I hope that my son will be able to walk and run after he is better."

Samnang is a 14-year-old ninth grade student from Cambodia. She is the only child for her parents who are both farmers. She enjoys reading books, doing her school work, listening to music, and watching TV. Her favorite meal is fried rice and coke and her favorite subject in school in math. She wants to be a pharmacist when she grows up! In November 2019, Samnang fell down from a stage and injured her right elbow. After that she went to a Khmer traditional healer but is not better and now she has come to Watsi's Medical Partner Children's Surgical Centre (CSC). They have started her treatment and found that she has an aneurysmal bone cyst that needs treatment. Fortunately, surgeons at Children's Surgical Centre can help. On September 24th, Samnang will undergo a fracture repair procedure, which will cost $465. This procedure will help the bone in her arm heal and she will be able to use her hand again. Samnang shared that she is hopeful that her hand will be ok and that she can use it easily again once she has surgery.

Skylar is a 3-year-old from Kenya. His mother performs manual labor and does laundry for people in their neighborhood and his father works at a construction site. Skylar is their only child. Skylar was born with hypospadias, a congenital abnormality that causes urinary dysfunction. Without treatment, he will continue to experience uncomfortable symptoms and will be at risk of infertility. Fortunately, Skylar is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on June 23. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $770 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. Skylar’s mother shared, “I don’t know what to do now so any financial support offered will be of great help to us.”

Musa is a two year-old boy from Tanzania, and he is the youngest in a family of four children. He is an active boy who loves playing, and his mother says he always wants to go out and play with other kids who are older than him. In May 2019, while Musa was out playing with other children in the morning around the kitchen, he accidentally stepped into the fire and burned his left foot. This accident left Musa with a deformed left foot. After healing, his toes have contracted, which makes walking painful and difficult because his toes are attached to the bottom of his foot. Now, Musa will need to undergo a surgery to remove his small toes and treat the contracture on his big toe on his left foot. Unfortunately, this procedure is costly for Musa and his family. Musa’s parents are small scale farmers who depend entirely on what they harvest for their daily living. They were only able to afford a few dressings during Musa's initial treatment, and the rest of the treatment was done at home through the use of local herbal medication. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Musa receive treatment. He is scheduled to undergo his surgery on December 8th at our medical partner's care center. This procedure will cost $1,088, and Musa and his family need help raising funds.

Zakayo is a 6-year-old from Tanzania. Zakayo is a firstborn child in his family. He is currently in nursery school, he just started school this year and his father says he loves school and he has made so many friends. He has not been able to read or write yet, but he is eager to learn. Zakayo got into a fire accident when he was one year old, his mother had cooked a meal and left the fire burning. He walked to the fire and touched the burning firewood with both his hands and he then fell into the fire burning both his hands and his stomach as well. His mother rushed to get him and got him out of the fire. He was treated using the traditional medications (honey, tree leaves and eggs). He healed but his hands now have a contracture limited his ability to use them. Fortunately, our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is helping Zakayo receive treatment. On December 4th, surgeons at their care center will perform a burn contracture release surgery so he will be able to use his hand and fingers well and this will help him in school. Now, his family needs help to fund this $874 procedure. Zakayo says, "I really want to be able to use both my hands like my friends and be able to do things for myself. My father says I need this treatment so that when I grow up i will not have trouble using my hands."

Sokunkanha is a 3-year-old girl from Cambodia. Sokunkanha has two older brothers who are in the 3rd grade. Her father is a factory worker and her mother is a farmer. Sokunkanha enjoys playing with toys with her brothers, painting, watching TV, and spending time outside with her mother. One year ago Sokunkanha received multiple injections in her right thigh as a treatment for bronchitis. After the injections, her mother noticed she was having trouble walking and running. Standing for long periods causes Sokunkanha pain and she is unable to walk easily. When Sokunkanha's family learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, they traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On September 29th, surgeons at CSC will perform a right patella realignment to realign the patella of her right knee allowing her to walk easily again. Now, Sokunkanha's family needs help to fund this $518 procedure. Sokunkanha's mother said, "I hope her knee and leg will be fixed now so she does not have to have more surgeries later on to fix this problem."

Lewis is a 6-year-old child from Kenya. He is ini pre-primary school and the firstborn in a family of two children. His mother has been separated from their father and so she is the one who hustles for their livelihoods. She is not employed and does casual work in the neighboring tea farms. Lewis was diagnosed with cryptorchidism, a condition in which one or both of the testicles remains undescended. If left untreated, Lewis has an increased risk of developing hernias, testicular cancer, and fertility problems in the future. Lewis will be receiving assistance from our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). Fortunately, he is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on June 2nd. AMHF is requesting $506 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. “My husband left me with the children and I am really struggling even to feed them. I kindly request for help to treat my son and God will bless you,” said Lewis mother quietly.

Adrian is a 6-year-old from Kenya. Adrian’s mother performs manual labor. Due to the financial instability she is experiencing, Adrian's grandparents are also helping take care of him. His grandparents make a living by performing manual labor and by farming. Adrian was born with hypospadias, a congenital abnormality that causes urinary dysfunction. Without treatment, he will continue to experience uncomfortable symptoms and will be at risk of infertility. Fortunately, Adrian is scheduled to undergo corrective surgery on June 16. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $700 to cover the total cost of his procedure and care. “When Adrian receives the required treatment, it will be a great relief and bring us joy,” shared Adrian's grandmother.

Nikai is a humble girl from Kenya. She is the second born in a family of four children. Her mother is a stay-at-home mom while the father is a herdsman. The family lives in a mud and grass thatched house. Nikai has clubfoot of her right foot. Clubfoot is a condition in which the foot is twisted out of shape. This causes difficulty walking and even wearing shoes. Fortunately, Nikai traveled to visit our medical partner's care center, AIC Cure International Hospital. There, surgeons will perform clubfoot repair surgery on August 18. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $1,224 to fund Nikai's clubfoot repair. After treatment, she will be able to wear shoes and walk easily. “I would like to see my daughter walk like other children. Any kind of support is highly appreciated,” Nikai's mother shared.
