Meet Tebarek, a very active and playful five-month-old baby boy who lives with his family in Ethiopia. "Tebarek was born with a birth defect called anorectal malformations," African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF), our medical partner, reports. "He developed bowel obstruction because of this condition, and an emergency colostomy was done when he was three days old." When he was first diagnosed with his condition, both of Tebarek's parents dropped everything to take him to the hospital to receive the care he currently needs. As a result of his condition, he has been unable to pass stool on his own and experiences colostomy related complications. Both of Tebarek's parents understand that he needs special care, and have dedicated all of their time to caring for him in lieu of working for the time being. Fortunately, there is a surgery to correct Tebarek's condition that will allow him to grow up engaging in normal childhood activities. He will first undergo an anorectoplasty to attach the rectum to the anus. Three months later, Tebarek will receive a colostomy closure. After treatment, Tebarek is expected to be able to pass stool on his own and fully recover with his parents help. $1,500 will cover the cost of both surgeries his stay in the hospital. "Nothing is more important than our baby's well being," Tebarek's parents share with us. "We lost all we had to get him treatment, and now we have nothing left. We will do anything for our baby and that is why we are here."
