Srey Cheab is a 37-year-old seafood seller from Cambodia. She has two sons and one daughter, and enjoys watching Khmer dramas on television in her free time. Ten years ago, Srey Cheab developed a pterygium in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and irritation. Pterygiums are non-cancerous growths of the conjunctiva, a mucous layer that lubricates the eye. The growths occur when the conjunctiva is exposed to excessive sun damage and the cells grow abnormally over the pupil. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, working, and going anywhere outside. When Srey Cheab learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for one and a half hours seeking treatment. Srey Cheab needs a surgical procedure to remove the abnormal conjunctiva from the cornea surface and replace it with a conjunctival graft to prevent recurrence. The total cost of her procedure is $201. This covers medications, supplies, and inpatient care for two days. The procedure is scheduled for July 10. She says, "I hope that I will be able to see clearly again and can return to my work."

Kunthea is a 26-year-old mechanic from Cambodia. He enjoy listening to music in his free time. Kunthea has strabismus in both eyes. Strabismus is a misalignment of the eye caused by injury or dysfunction in the associated nerves and muscles. It is difficult for him to see clearly and he experiences a loss in confidence. Kunthea traveled to our medical partner's care center to receive treatment. On July 3, surgeons at our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), will perform a corrective procedure to align his eyes. Now, Kunthea needs help to raise $292 to fund this procedure. He says, "I hope that after my surgery I will be able to see and return to my work at the moto shop."

Chrech is a rice farmer from Cambodia. She has two children and likes spending time at home. Since she was ten years old, she's had severe knee pain, which is getting worse. She can't look after her children or walk very far. When Chrech learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On January 10, surgeons at CSC will perform a joint arthrodesis procedure to fuse her right knee and to help relieve pain and improve mobility. Now, Chrech needs help to fund this $480 procedure. She says, "I want to take care of my family."

Roberto is ten years old and lives in the outskirts of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic with his mother and two sisters. He is in the fourth grade and would like to be a pilot when he grows up. Roberto was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect, in which a hole exists between the two lower chambers of his heart. Blood leaks through this hole without first passing through the lungs to obtain oxygen, leaving him sickly and weak. Although Roberto is not Haitian, our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is collaborating with their partners in the Dominican Republic to offer treatment to Dominican children. He will undergo cardiac surgery at our medical partner's care center. First, Roberto will undergo a full cardiac assessment on February 13. This assessment will include physical exams, labs, and an overnight stay at the hospital. Haiti Cardiac Alliance is requesting $1,500 to fund these procedures. Funding for Roberto also covers the cost of medications and social support for him and him family. Gift of Life International is contributing $7,000 to cover additional costs associated with Roberto's surgical care. "I want to say thank you to everyone who is helping me to get my heart fixed," says Roberto.
