Nathanaelle is the lone girl in her family of all boys, but no less energetic. At three years old, she loves to play with her brothers and the other children in her neighborhood but is frustrated at how easily she gets winded and cannot keep up. Nathanaelle was born with a congenital heart defect, which affects how blood flows through her heart and lungs, eventually causing blood low in oxygen to circulate to the rest of her body. She often develops shortness of breath when doing normal activities and since birth, has frequently had fevers and illnesses. Our medical partners at Haiti Cardiac Alliance say that after surgical repair of her heart, Nathanaelle should be able to lead a healthy, boisterous life with no need for further surgeries. Rose is about to give birth to her first child and she is hoping to access maternal health services that will ensure a safe delivery. Rose is a farmer who grows crops for family use and sugarcane to supplement their other needs. Rose’s father is a carpenter who works hard to sustain the family.
