49-year-old Kabarwani is a single mother from Uganda. Her son has a small business while her daughter has a baby and no job, so Kabarwani grows food to feed her family and also sells the surplus to make a little money for additional needs. About a year and a half ago, Kabarwani started feeling lower abdominal pain. She visited a local health unit where she was given medicine, but her condition only worsened. When Kabarwani went to a hospital she was diagnosed with uterine fibroids-- non cancerous growths on her uterus. Although these types of growths do not typically lead to cancer, the doctor recommended that Kabarwani come back for surgery to remove them-- surgery she was unnable to afford. So instead Kabarwani chose to just live with condition. Besides abdominal and back pain, Kabarwani also has prolonged bleeding and painful menstruations. Due to this pain, she is currently unable to dig and tend to her crops, or walk long distances. If not treated, the symptoms will persist and she will be at risk of severe anaemia. $250 will cover the costs of a total abdominal hysterectomy, where doctors at African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) will remove the fibroids as well as her entire uterus. This will ensure that the fibroid growths do not return. After surgery, Kabarwani hopes to resume digging to continue supporting herself and her family. "I hope to be well soon," Kabarwani shares.

Tam is a 73-year-old woman who is married with two sons, five daughters, and 20 grandchildren. She enjoys visiting the pagoda to listen the monks pray in her spare time. Three years ago, Tam developed entropion on both eyes. This causes her eyelids to turn inward so that the eyelashes scrape the surface of her eye. Tam experiences blurred vision, itchiness, tearing, and irritation. She can't open her eyes fully, and always feels uncomfortable. She has traveled for three hours with her daughter-in-law to reach Watsi's medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), for treatment. Tam will undergo an upper eyelid correction surgery on both eyes, which will relieve her of the irritations caused by entropion. The surgery will cost $290. After treatment, Tam will be able to easily see and open/close her eyes again without discomfort.

Antony is a 44-year-old man who has been diagnosed with osteomyelitis, a bone infection, after a road accident in 2007. He is a father to two children, and separated from his wife in 2009. He has since moved back to his rural home in Kenya. In January of 2007, Antony was in a road accident and suffered multiple injuries. Since then, he had been to various hospitals, and had several surgeries, all in an attempt to improve his health. In our hospital partner's facility, Antony has had several surgeries on his left leg. He has used all his savings, as he has not had any meaningful source of income since his accident. Antony has even conducted several harambees, which are events held to raise funds, to help clear his medical bills. Antony's last surgery was in January of 2016, and he is in need of financial assistance to access further medical treatment. If not treated Antony may not be able to walk well again. There is possibility of severe infection that may result in amputation. $1,500 will cover the cost of of bone transport surgery to cure Antony's osteomyelitis. Portions of the bone that are infected will be removed, with the empty space being filled by bone or tissue from a different area to restore blood flow. After recovery, Antony will be able to continue working and live his life without the possibility of amputation. “I want to be well to earn a living for myself," he shares. "[I want to] write a book on experiences with broken limbs."

Path, a 38-year-old farmer from Cambodia, has an open fracture of his right distal tibia and fibula. The fractures were caused by a gunshot wound he sustained from the Thai army when he was crossing the Thai-Cambodian border. Path is married with one son, and he enjoys watching television and working around his home. After his injury, Path received some treatment in Thailand before returning to Cambodia and using Khmer traditional medicine, which proved unsuccessful. His wound is painful and produces pus discharge, preventing him from working. Path then traveled four hours with his brother to reach Watsi's medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre (CSC), for treatment. Surgeons at the facility will perform a debridement-- a surgical removal of infected and dead tissue-- to clean the wound. They will then perform an open reduction internal fixation surgery, during which they will remove the existing hardware from his leg, reset the fractured bones, and add a frame to fix them in place. Path cannot afford the $405 surgical procedure that he needs to properly repair his broken bones. Let's help Path raise the required funds so that he can heal and return to his work and family.

Sopheak is a 24-year-old factory worker from Cambodia. She is married with one son, and enjoys looking after and helping her parents on the farm. Sopheak developed an ear infection when she was two-years-old that caused a bilateral perforated tympanic membrane-- a tear in both of her eardrums. Since then, she has experienced pus drainage, hearing loss, and pain from both ears. It is difficult for her to communicate with other people. After hearing about Children's Surgical Centre (CSC) on the radio, she traveled one hour to reach CSC for treatment. $598 will cover the costs of a myringoplasty in both of her ears, where doctors will surgically repair the tears in her eardrums. This will treat the infection and stop the pain and discharge. Surgeons will first perform the surgery on her right ear, and once that heals she will return to have the surgery on her left ear. After these operations Sopheak's hearing will gradually improve over time. Then she will be able to continue her work in the factory and supporting her family.

Meet Musa, a cute, four-year-old boy from a loving family in Tanzania. He is a happy and active boy, who loves to talk and ask many questions. At home, he enjoys playing with cars and playing balls with his little brother. Musa was a healthy boy growing normally until the age of five months. After a bout of pneumonia, Musa began to have a growth on his head that was slowly increasing. When Musa’s parents failed to take their son for treatment, his acquired hydrocephalus grew and continues to grow to this day. Without surgical intervention, the swelling will place extreme pressure on his brain, resulting in vomiting, dizziness, blindness, and cognitive impairment. Because his mother works as a small-time farmer and his father is an evangelist, they are unable to provide financial means for Musa's medical treatment. $775 will cover costs for a shunt to be surgically inserted. This shunt will redirect the buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in Musa's skull and prevent further brain damage which can cause blindness. With rehabilitation and medicine, Musa will be healthy and strong again. Musa's mother shares, "It hurts to hear my son asking to be taken to school and for me to be unable to do so. I hope he will gain the ability to walk, so that he can walk to school like the other children."
