Joselyn is a little 22-month-old girl from a rural village in Guatemala. Joselyn is an only child and loves to play with a little doll she got for her first birthday. To entertain herself while her mother works, she loves to sing and play with the flowers that grow near her house.
Her mother says that Joselyn is very curious and smart little girl. Her father is a corn farmer and also cuts and sells firewood which is used by her mother to cook their food.
Our medical partner, Wuqu' Kawoq (WK), tells us that Joselyn has acute malnutrition. “Without intervention she will suffer from the long-term effects of malnutrition. She will continue to lose height and weight, her immune system will become extremely fragile and her physical and brain development will be stunted,” explains WK. “This will affect her ability to concentrate and succeed in school.”
$535 will provide Joselyn with treatment that will supply her with the growth monitoring, micronutrient and food supplementation, and medication for her to recoup some of the weight and height she has lost and increase her overall caloric intake. In addition, her parents will receive intensive nutrition education thus building their confidence and ability to care for Joselyn throughout her childhood. Intervening now will give Joselyn the chance to live a healthy productive life.
Joselyn's mother says, "I did not know she was malnourished until today, but after talking with you I understand. I am happy this program exists, and I thank God that you want to help us. I think my little girl will start to grow better and one day she will be able to become a great doctor.”
