Without a high level of education, Me Maw now relies on work to support herself. However, she recently had to stop working when she started experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, and heart palpitations. Doctors diagnosed her with rheumatic heart disease, a serious condition that is can be fatal if left untreated. Without an income, Me Maw cannot afford healthcare on her own. But for $1,500, we can pay for her to receive a procedure called a cardiac-mitral valve repair. This procedure will repair the part of Me Maw’s heart which makes sure that blood keeps circulating. Margaret is a 53-year-old woman from Kenya who came to Kijabe Hospital, a Watsi partner in Kenya, to seek treatment for abdominal bleeding. Margaret used to own a small clothing shop until it was destroyed in Kenya’s post-election violence. She is a mother of four, but two of her children passed away in an accident. Margaret has had abdominal bleeding for over three months now, and is at risk of becoming severely anemic. Her condition requires a total abdominal hysterectomy. When Margaret and her husband first learned of her condition, they sold their livestock to raise funds for care, but they cannot afford the total cost of the procedure. A few months ago Robelto began experiencing abdominal pains. Doctors discovered he had colon cancer. Emergency surgery was performed. Now, chemotherapy is needed to cure his cancer completely. Robelto currently lives with symptoms such as loss of appetite, pelvis pain, insomnia, and fever. The cost of chemotherapy is $1,500.
