Cheb is a 68-year-old Khmer noodle seller from Cambodia. She enjoys listening to the monks pray on the radio and visiting the local pagoda. One month ago, Cheb developed a cataract in her right eye, causing her blurry vision and headaches. She has difficulty seeing things clearly, recognizing faces, and going anywhere outside. When Cheb learned about our medical partner, Children's Surgical Centre, she traveled for three hours seeking treatment. On January 13th, doctors will perform a phacoemulsification cataract surgery and an intraocular lens implant in her right eye. After recovery, she will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs help to fund this $229 procedure. "I hope that I can help take care of my grandchildren and be able to help with the housework and go outside on my own," she said.

Meet Fanny, a 10-year-old girl from Kenya! The second born in a family of three children, Fanny lives with her siblings and hardworking parents. Her father is a small businessman, her mother is a housewife, and her family keeps a small-scale farm, which they inherited from Fanny’s grandparents. Fanny has hydrocephalus, which is an excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain. This condition causes massive head size and severe headaches. Without surgery, Fanny is likely to suffer brain damage due to the increased intra cranial pressure. For $980, we can fund a shunt incision for Fanny! This surgery will relieve some of the pressure on Fanny’s brain and she will be able to live a normal and healthy life. “My daughter is in a lot of pain because of her condition and I feel it for her. Kyaw is a 27-year-old from Burma who is bravely fighting a range of challenges. He has lived with cardiac disease since he was a boy, but his family passed away when he was young and his adoptive family was unable to afford the surgery he needed to live a normal life. Despite his desire to support himself, Kyaw is struggling make ends meet on his own because of fatigue and shortness of breath caused by his condition. A $2,000 cardiac surgery is all Kyaw needs to live a life uninhibited by the cardiac problem that’s affected him his whole life.

Two-year-old Akiya is a tough little guy. He was born with a congenital malformation that makes him unable to pass stool properly. Because of Akiya’s condition, Akiya’s mother quit working as a teacher to take care of him at home. Akiya and his mother now depend on his father to support the family and pay his medical bills. But even with Akiya’s father’s income, Akiya’s parents are unable to afford the surgery that Akiya requires. Daw is a 55-year-old mother of four sons. She is also the primary caretaker for her husband and her elderly mother, both of whom had strokes in the last few years. Until recently, Daw sold snacks as a street vendor, but health problems now prevent her from working. Daw lived a healthy life before she began experiencing severe abdominal pain. She was diagnosed with uterine prolapse, a condition in which the muscles holding the uterus in place fail, causing the uterus to drop out of its normal position. Daw's doctor recommended removing her uterus, but because of the medical bills she was unable to support her family and afford the surgery. Bernie is described as a “comedian” who loves basketball and playing the guitar. Needless to say, he is excited to get better, “It means so much to me because I am very dependent on my family. I am looking forward to being able to be in ministry again.” For $955 Bernie can receive an internal reduction and external fixation of his knee. Bao is a 44-year-old woman from Burma who needs heart surgery. Bao takes care of her 67-year-old mother and her disabled younger sister. She earns a living as a farmer, but recently she has been dependent on her siblings to help support her due to her heart disease. Throughout her life, Bao has experienced fatigue and she is unable to “walk very far without experiencing heart palpitations and shortness of breath.” Because of her heart disease, Bao is unable to work to help support her family and pay for her medical bills.
