Meet Hussein, a four-year-old boy from Somalia. Edna Adan Hospital (EAD), our medical partner in Somaliland, shares that, “Hussein sustained severe burns to both of his arms when he fell onto burning charcoal, which is used in traditional household kitchens on the floor for cooking. He now has decreased use of both arms due to burn contractures.” For $1165, we can fund a procedure to release the contractures on Hussein’s right side--a procedure that has already been completed on his left side. “Hussein’s mother is hopeful that he will have restored mobility in his wrist and hands and be able to continue his life as normally as possible.” Let’s help Hussein get back on track!

This little guy is Gerson, a one-year-old from Guatemala. Together with his parents and three siblings, Gerson lives in a humble home in Central Guatemala. Recently Gerson was diagnosed with malnutrition. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, tells us that Gerson has had several acute diarrheal illnesses and has lost some weight. He has stopped growing and has been lethargic and acting differently from other children. Though his parents work hard to provide for the family, they’ve been experiencing a financial crisis that makes it hard to put food on the table. Gerson’s parents tell the Wuqu’ Kawoq social work team that they’ve noticed that Gerson is growing much more slowly then their other children, which they attribute to the tough financial times they are going through. They’ve reached out to Watsi for help so that their little boy can "grow up, study and be a professional." For $535, Watsi can help get little Gerson on the road back to health. He will receive food, nutrition education, and nutritional supplements. This regimen should stop Gerson’s diarrhea and allow him to start growing again. His developmental milestones should improve and hopefully he will go on to live a happy, health life!

“I hope to be provided with a safe and successful delivery, invest in a better business which will enable me to cater for my baby, siblings, mother-in-law and my elderly parents’ basic needs,” says Elizabeth. Meet Elizabeth, a 20-year-old pregnant woman from Kenya. “Elizabeth experiences headaches, fatigue, and lower abdominal pain frequently which does not allow her to perform her daily activities like gardening, house chores, baking, and making chapatis to sell to pupils,” says our medical partner, Lwala Community Alliance (LCA). Elizabeth lives with her mother-in-law and husband. “She bakes and sells chapatis to pupils during break time and lunch hours. Her husband is a primary school teacher and works on his farm during weekends. She shared with us that the income they derive from the business and teaching is not enough to take care of the medical bills during delivery,” continues LCA. For $290, we can fund prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care to ensure that both Elizabeth and her baby will be healthy. “With no complications arising during delivery, Elizabeth will be able to perform her daily activities and sell her chapatis with no discomfort,”concludes LCA.

Say hello to Agnes, a 65-year-old widow and mother of two from Kenya. Our medical partner at African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF) tells us, “Agnes has a small vegetable garden and a goat. She lives alone and is able to cater to her needs through the little garden and what her children send home.” “Agnes is losing sight in both her eyes due to cataracts,” shares AMHF, “Her right eye is slightly better than her left, but it will still need surgery at a later date. If the surgery is not done, Agnes will not be able to see and will become completely blind with time.” Agnes tells us, “I now cannot work in my farm because of my poor vision. I hope to get treated and see again.” For $230 we can directly fund Agnes’ cataract removal at AMHF. With your help, we can safeguard her sight and allow Agnes to continue living an independent life.

Say hello to Raj, a one-year-old boy from Nepal! His father works as a temporary teacher in the public schools and is the only financial support for their family. Recently, Raj was playing in the courtyard of his home when he fell down on his right hand, fracturing his radius and ulna. Our medical partner, Possible, tells us, "After the incident, Raj is crying in pain. He is not even able to sleep properly at night." “My salary from teaching is just enough to eat for our big family. To send the children to school is difficult for us,” shares Raj’s father. “How can we pay for his treatment?” We can fund a successful treatment for Raj for $205. With treatment, “Raj will be relieved from the pain. He will be able to move his arm and play. He will be able to sleep without pain. He will not develop any residual deformity,” explains Possible.
