Mary is a 41-year-old woman living in Nairobi with her husband and five children. Before becoming ill, Mary worked at the Nairobi dumpsite while her husband worked as a day laborer offloading sand from lorries. Four of her children are in primary school and the eldest completed high school last year. About a year ago, Mary noticed several lumps in her right breast. She went to the hospital and was given some oral medication. She continued to worry about the lumps and visited a second hospital, where a biopsy was performed. The biopsy confirmed Mary's fear that the lumps were cancerous. Her doctors have recommended that she have a mastectomy to prevent the cancer from spreading. Our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation, is requesting $816 to fund Mary's surgery, which is scheduled to take place on September 22. Mary is determined to get well so that she can care for her children. She says, "My children are still young and need me. I don’t want to die and leave them struggling in the slums. At least I managed to teach one of them through high school. I wish I will be able to see the others through high school as well."

Salomon is a six-month-old baby from Haiti. He lives in a small city with his parents and two older brothers. His father is a day laborer, and his mother sometimes works in the market. He is a cheerful and outgoing baby. He was born with Tetralogy of Fallot, a rare heart condition caused by several heart defects, including a hole between two chambers of the heart and a muscular blockage in one of the heart's valves. As a result, not enough oxygen is delivered to his body, leaving him sickly and weak. Without surgery, the condition is fatal. Salomon will fly to the Cayman Islands to receive treatment. On June 20, he will undergo cardiac surgery. This $17,000 surgery is subsidized by Have a Heart Cayman. Salomon's family also needs help to fund the costs of surgery prep. The $1,500 bill covers labs, medicines, and checkup and followup appointments. It also supports passport obtainment and the social workers from our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, who will accompany Salomon's family overseas. Estherline is a 14-year-old girl who lives with her parents and four siblings in Haiti. Before she became sick, Estherline enjoyed going to school and church, and playing with her brothers and sisters. Several years ago, Estherline contracted rheumatic fever, which caused damage to her heart. She developed a condition called mitral and aortic regurgitation, where blood backs up into her heart and does not properly circulate through her body. This condition causes Estherline to experience shortness of breath, painful breathing, fatigue, and swelling of the legs. If left untreated, her condition could become fatal. Seeking treatment through our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, Estherline is scheduled to undergo heart surgery to correct her condition on July 6. Although Estherline's [transportation](https://watsi.org/profile/b6c83c8bebe1-estherline) to our medical partner's care center has already been funded by Watsi, she is still in need of $1,500 to cover the cost of her heart surgery prep. The organization, Have a Heart Cayman, is also subsidizing Estherline's surgery, donating $27,000 to cover the rest of her medical bills. "I will pray that God blesses everyone that is helping our family through our daughter's illness," her mother says.

Meet two-year-old Gustavo. He lives with his mother, grandmother, and aunts and uncles in rural Guatemala. Gustavo loves eating vegetables and porridge. Gustavo has been diagnosed with cryptorchidism, a medical condition in which the testes remained undescended. Without surgery, Gustavo is at risk of developing a hernia, infertility, or testicular cancer. On September 6, Gustavo will undergo an orchidopexy surgery to correct his condition. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, is asking for $1,500 in donations to fund Gustavo's surgery and hospital stay. This amount will also cover travel and accommodation costs for his mother. "I have no doubt that Gustavo will feel better after his surgery. I thank you with my entire heart for all this help you have given us. May God bless you all," says Gustavo's mother.

Yar is a 40-year-old woman from Burma. She is unemployed and lives with her 70-year-old father. After experiencing severe stomach pains, Yar recently underwent abdominal surgery at a local hospital. A few days into recovery, she noticed that her incision did not appear to be healing properly. She returned to the hospital, where they discovered that her intestine was protruding through the wound. On July 19, surgeons will operate on Yar's abdomen to address the improperly healing wound. Our medical partner, Burma Children Medical Fund, requests $1,500 to cover her treatment. In the future, Yar looks forward to recovering and regaining independence. "I hope to raise pigs and chickens for a source of income once I am recovered," she says.
