Meet 10-year-old Yusuph, a little boy from Tanzania. “Yusuph is the last born in a family of six children. When he was a year and a half old, he just did not stay put. He loved walking around the house and passing through every little path that his tiny body could fit in,” shares our medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation (AMHF). “One dreadful afternoon,” the AMHF staff explains, “Yusuph was well covered with a nice and warm cloak. His mother had left him inside the house with some toys to play with. She quickly went to a nearby market to buy some peanuts. During that short trip, Yusuph decided to stop playing and walked right into to the outside kitchen where there was an open fire and food cooking in a pot. As he went to pick up a wooden serving spoon, his cloak caught fire and he couldn’t take it off." Luckily, an aunt who lived nearby heard his crying and was able to help him. However, many months after the incident, Yusuph was still left with severe burn scar contractures on his left arm. A contracture is a pulling together of the skin around a burned area that can often lead to restricted movement. Yusuph, a previous Watsi patient, underwent a contracture release of his left elbow in September of 2015, but AMHF says, “he still needs a release of the wrist to be able to use his hand better.” For $550, this second contracture release surgery will be possible. The surgery will consist of a small open incision to remove all the thickened and abnormal scar tissue. The removal will allow for a restoration of range of motion in Yusuph’s wrist. “Yusuph’s wish is to go back to school,” AMHF tells us. Let’s help make this happen!
