Medjie lives in a suburb of Port-au-Prince in Haiti with her mother and grandmother. She is her mother's first child. Medjie was born with a cardiac condition called ventricular septal defect. This means that there is a hole between the two lower chambers of her heart. Blood leaks through this hole without passing through her lungs to get oxygen. This leaves her feeling sickly and weak. Medjie needs to undergo pediatric cardiac surgery at our medical partner's care centre, St. Damien Hospital. First, Medjie will undergo a full cardiac assessment on January 16. This assessment will include physical exams, labs, and an overnight stay at the hospital. Our medical partner, Haiti Cardiac Alliance, is requesting $1,500 to fund these procedures. Funding for Medjie also covers the cost of medications and social support for her and her family. Gift of Life International is contributing $3,500 to cover additional costs associated with Medjie's surgical care. Medjie's mother sells homemade food at the local markets, and she cannot afford her daughter's treatment. She is very thankful to all the people who have helped Medjie get this surgery. "I would like to thank God for putting so many people in my family's path to help my daughter have surgery," she says.

Eunice is a 58-year-old woman from Malawi who works as a nutritionist for the government. She raised her eight children as a single mother. She currently lives with her grandchildren and oldest daughter. In her free time, Eunice enjoys reading the daily paper, watching films, and singing gospel songs with her church. Last April, Eunice began to experience uncomfortable symptoms in a sensitive area. The pain of her condition caused her to miss work. Unfortunately, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer. On November 10, she underwent a hysterectomy surgery. Eunice is unable to afford this $643 procedure. When she learned about Watsi, she was overjoyed. She is excited to return to her job and her family. "I am very thankful for what this has done for me," Eunice says. "This is God's intervention."

Seperenza is a 27-year-old mother from rural Uganda. She has four children, two of whom are twins. Seperenza and her husband, Amos, are subsistence farmers in the western part of the East African Rift Valley. They grow rice, groundnuts, and beans. During her free time, Seperenza enjoys playing with her children. During the delivery of her twins, Seperenza developed an uncomfortable condition in a sensitive area. She experiences pain and urinary dysfunction, and she lost the ability to work. On October 24, Seperenza underwent a repair surgery at our medical partner's hospital, Bwindi Community Hospital. Now, she needs help to fund this $547 procedure. After recovery, Seperenza hopes to visit her church and give thanks to God for restoring her health. She says, “I pray that God will bless the people that are donating to my treatment, and that He will prosper them to help other women who are like me.”

Meet Kasaija, an 81-year-old married man from Uganda who has seven children; three girls who are all married and four boys who mostly do casual labor. Kasaija used to get his income from trading in goats, but since he fell sick, he depends on his children as he cannot work independently. His stay-at-home wife has no other source of income. So, Kasaija hopes to receive necessary treatment from Watsi's medical partner, African Mission Healthcare Foundation. In 2009, Kasaija noticed a painful swelling in his left inguinal area which started causing nausea and stomachaches. He has spent the last seven years with this condition. He has sleepless nights because of pain; he can only sleep comfortably on his stomach. Despite receiving a diagnosis of a left inguinal hernia, Kasaija has not been able to receive medical attention because he cannot afford it. Instead, he has resorted to using herbs to no avail. "I feel a lot of pain which makes me very uncomfortable," says Kasaija. Due to the growing pain, he still remains unable to work. If his condition remains untreated, Kasaija is at risk of further complications. For $249, surgeons at Holy Family Virika Hospital in Uganda will be able to repair Kasaija's hernia. They will ensure that the intestinal muscle is placed correctly and reinforce the weakened abdominal muscles with mesh or sutures. Kasaija should heal quickly, so that he may return to his family pain-free. After surgery, Kasaija hopes to resume trading in goats to help sustain his family.
