Hellen is 67 years old and a mother of four from South Sudan. She is a widow. She and her children currently live in a refugee settlement in Uganda due to the ongoing wars in South Sudan.
Hellen's symptoms started three years ago, when she developed a cataract in her left eye, causing her itching, tearing, and pain. A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye, so it is like looking through a frosty or fogged-up window. Hellen has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, making her unwilling to go out on her own.
When Hellen learned about our medical partner, Hope Health Action, she traveled for four hours to seek treatment. On August 27th, doctors at St. Mauritz Health Centre will perform cataract surgery and implant an intraocular lens in her left eye. After she has recovered, Hellen will be able to see clearly. Now, she needs your help to fund this $296 procedure.
