Van Dao is a 69-year-old fish seller from Cambodia. He is married and lives with his wife, who is also a fish seller. Together, they have one daughter, three sons, and six grandchildren. During his free time, Van Dao enjoys listening to the news on the radio.
Two years ago, Van Dao developed a cataract in his left eye, causing him to experience light sensitivity and blurry vision. He has difficulty seeing things clearly, including colors and faces, and is worried about falling when walking, so he is not able to go places on his own.
When Van Dao learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for two and a half hours seeking treatment. On July 20th, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and place an intraocular lens implant in his left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Van Dao says, “I hope I can see well enough to easily go outside, drive a motorcycle, and help my wife with our business”

Van Dao underwent cataract surgery so he can see clearly and return to doing the things he loves.
Van Dao was happy that a relative told him to have his cataract removed at Children’s Surgical Centre. He had a successful operation and was able to return home the next day with eye drops to reduce the risk of infection. Already, Van Dao can recognize faces and see distinctive colors. Van Dao’s life will improve because he can sell fish at the local market with his wife to support their family.
Van Dao’s wife said “it is a relief that my husband’s vision will improve. He was sad he could not help at the market and now he can go with me. Thank you for all of the donations to fix his eye. We are very grateful.”
