64-year-old Nim is a Cambodian man with eight children and ten grandchildren. Six months ago, he developed glaucoma in both of his eyes.
In this condition, a build-up of pressure within the eye degenerates the optic nerve. So far, this has caused Nim blurred vision and a frequent burning sensation. And if left untreated, his glaucoma could even lead to full blindness.
By trade, Nim is a rice farmer. But his glaucoma has degraded his vision so much that it is now difficult for him to do this work. He also has also been having trouble doing one of his favorite leisure activities: reading Buddhist religious texts.
Nim’s doctors have recommended he undergo a trabeculectomy in both eyes. In this procedure, surgeons will make a small hole in each of Nim’s eyes to reduce their high pressure. Although Nim’s family cannot afford this operation on their own, for $300, we can sponsor it. This sum will also cover the two-day hospital stay and medications that will help Nim recuperate from the procedure.
After his dual trabeculectomy surgery, the pressure and burning in Nim’s eyes will be relieved.
“I hope I won’t go blind so I can continue my work on the farm,” Nim shares. Let’s help make it possible.
