Oun is a 69-year-old man from Kampong Cham province, located along the Mekong River. He has one daughter, three sons, and eight grandchildren. He retired from the army several years ago and lives with his wife, who is a blanket weaver. At home, he enjoys listening to the news and the monks praying on the radio.
One year ago, Oun developed a cataract in his right eye, causing him light sensitivity, tearing, and blurry vision. He has been troubled by his diminishing eyesight, but did not know what to do about it.
When Oun learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, he traveled for three and a half hours seeking treatment. On November 3rd, doctors will perform a small incision cataract surgery and implant a new lens in his right eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs help to fund this $253 procedure.
Our shared: “I hope after surgery I can see well again. I want to be able to take care of myself and help my wife, too.”

Oun underwent cataract surgery so that he can see well again.
Oun was lonely sitting at home because he could not go outside without assistance, so he was happy when a villager suggested he could improve his vision by visiting Children’s Surgical Centre. There he had successful surgery and was able to return home the following day. He’s rested at home for a week and applied eye drops eight times daily to decrease the risk of infection and aid in healing. Oun’s eyesight has improved and he is now able to resume his daily activities. This will also improve his self-esteem as he will not have to rely on others for support.
Oun said: I am grateful to see again and be useful to my family. Thank you to the surgeons, nurses, and the people who paid to help me have this surgery for my eye. It makes me happy that I feel healthy again.”
