Albertina is a mother from Guatemala. She lives with her youngest son, daughter, and her son-in-law. Albertina works every day doing household work, such as washing clothes and cooking meals for her family.
Albertina underwent a pap smear test with the nurses in our medical partner’s women’s health program, and the results of her pap came back positive. Though Albertina does not currently have symptoms, she still needs to undergo a colposcopy, which is a guided biopsy procedure that removes affected areas of the cervix. A colposcopy is often curative for cancerous or precancerous lesions of the cervix, and it is therefore is the best way to prevent the spread of cervical cancer.
With $218 in funding, Albertina will consult with a specialist who will perform the colposcopy. Even if cancer or pre-cancer is found in her biopsy results, this procedure is often curative. Albertina will be able to return to work with peace of mind, ready to continue fighting for her family’s wellbeing. The procedure is scheduled for January 17.
Albertina says, “I don’t want to die, my family depends on me. I need to live for them. I ask for your help, for you to become part of my family. Every day I pray that God does not let go of me.”
