Thy is a 49-year-old rice farmer living in rural Cambodia. Together, he and his wife have two sons, three daughters and one grandchild. His wife also works as a rice farmer. When he has free time, Thy enjoys watching Cambodian boxing.
One year ago, Thy developed a cataract in his left eye. The cataract obscures his vision, and makes his eye tear and itch. As a result of his discomfort and visual impairment, Thy feels that he is less able to go about his life independently.
Thy learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre, and sought their help. On January 23rd, doctors at Kien Khleang National Rehabilitation Centre will perform cataract surgery, and implant an intraocular lens in Thy’s left eye. After recovery, he will be able to see clearly. Now, he needs your help to fund this $253 procedure.
Thy said: “I hope after surgery I can work more, help my wife do housework, and take care of our grandchild.”

Thy underwent sight restoring cataract surgery.
Thy took the advice of relatives and traveled from Battambang to the capital city to have his cataract removed. He stayed overnight in the hospital, rested at home for a few more days, and will apply eyedrops eight times daily for the next couple of weeks to aid in healing. When his eye has completely healed, he will be able to work outside on his rice farm and travel independently to visit family. This is important as he is the primary breadwinner for his family and he needs to support them with his rice harvests. His eyesight has improved and he is now able to resume his daily activities. This will improve his self-esteem as he won’t have to rely on others for support.
Thy said: “I was excited to receive care from the staff and doctors. The doctor explained my eye disease and I had successful surgery on my eye. It was free of charge and I am very grateful for the care so I can support my family.”
