Meet Dulce, a 16-month-old girl from Guatemala. Our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq (WK), tells us, “Dulce lives with her parents and five siblings. She loves to play with all of her siblings, especially her twin. Although her parents were extremely happy to find out that they were expecting twins, they struggled to afford even the most basic necessities. Overall, Dulce is a happy child- often smiling and calm.”
Dulce currently lives with acute malnutrition. “Ten months ago, Dulce’s mother struggled to purchase enough food to feed Dulce. Dulce was frequently ill with diarrhea and a cough. Now, she is at risk for the long-term effects of malnutrition,” explains WK. “If intervention does not occur, she will continue to fall away from the growth curve. Her immune system will suffer, and her ability to succeed down the road in school will decrease due to restraints on her brain’s ability to development.”
As a result of food insecurity and marginalization, indigenous Guatemalan villages have the highest rates of stunting in the world. In addition to growth stunting, malnutrition can lead to lower IQ, heart disease, diabetes, and obesity.
$512 will provide Dulce with nutritional supplements to avoid the permanent effects of malnutrition. Medication will remove the gastrointestinal infection causing her diarrhea and will treat her cough. Her mother will also be given the educational tools to prevent malnutrition and better care for Dulce and her siblings for years to come. Without these combined efforts, Dulce would continue to have low energy and limited mental potential. This nutritional intervention has far-reaching benefits - Dulce will recoup her weight and height and strengthen her immune system, thus allowing her to fight infection and illness throughout this life.
Dulce’s mother shares, “I want to see my child healthy and growing well. But, my husband and I feel that we do not have the ability to give the best care to our children. Because of us, Dulce is often sick. If we can get help from you, our lives would be different. You will give our daughter a fair chance to succeed.”
