Tum is a 54-year-old rice farmer from Cambodia married with five sons, two daughters, and 10 grandchildren. She enjoys going to the pagoda to listen to the monks pray and cleaning around her home.
Tum developed a pterygium in each eye one year ago, which is a growth of tissue on the eye. This causes her blurred vision, burning, itching, tearing, and photophobia. She can’t see everyone clearly, go outside easily, or do work very well. To receive treatment, Tum traveled three hours with her sister to reach Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC).
After a $150 pterygium excision surgery in each eye she will be relieved of burning and irritation and her vision will improve.

Tum received successful treatment for the growths on her eyes.
54-year-old Tum from Cambodia is married with five sons, two daughters, and 10 grandchildren. One year ago, Tum developed a pterygium - a growth of tissue - in each eye. For this past year, the growth has caused her blurred vision, burning, itching, tearing, and extreme sensitivity to light.
After traveling three hours with her sister to reach Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), she received a pterygium excision surgery in each eye, and the pterygiums were successfully removed. Today Tum says she feels much more comfortable, the tearing has stopped, and she can finally see clearly again.
“Now I can help my family do some work at the farm and go anywhere outside on my own,” says Tum.
