“I hope I can see clearly again someday so that I can easily cook and clean in my home,” 70-year-old Bon tells us.
A native of Cambodia, Bon is mother to two children and grandmother to one. Her home life is important to her. When she does leave the house, she likes to visit her local pagoda to listen to the monks pray and to worship with others there.
However, visiting the pagoda—and even completing her day-to-day chores around the home—has become more difficult for Bon lately. A year ago, she developed a cataract, or clouded lens, in each eye. Her cataracts make her vision blurry and give her headaches. As a result, she can’t see clearly—which, in turn, makes it hard for her to get around easily on her own.
If left untreated, her condition could worsen and cause complete blindness: cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide.
With $225 in funding, we can provide her with the double cataract surgery she needs. Doctors will perform a two-part procedure on each eye: they will first remove each clouded lens through a small incision, then will insert a functioning, artificial lens as a replacement. The requested $225 will also cover the two-day hospital stay and medications that Bon will need to recuperate safely from her operations.
After this procedure, Bon will be able to see clearly again—including the faces of her children and grandchildren.
