Rith is a curious and playful 11-month-old baby boy from Cambodia. He is very active and loves playing with toys, running around the house, and watching cartoons. He has two older sisters and one older brother. To support their family, his father manages a grocery store, and his mother works in a garment factory.
Last December, Rith grabbed a hot pot and burned his left fingers. His parents took him to a clinic for medical care, and he received wound dressing. However, he developed a scar contracture after his burn healed. A scar contracture occurs when the skin surrounding a burn scar matures, thickens, and tightens, preventing movement. Because of this, Rith is currently unable to grasp objects and often cries when his mother tries to stretch the skin on his fingers.
When Rith’s family learned about our medical partner, Children’s Surgical Centre (CSC), they traveled for a half hour seeking treatment. On August 8th, surgeons at CSC will perform a burn contracture release surgery, inserting pins and a skin graft. This procedure will hopefully allow Rith to use his fingers easily again. Now, his family needs help funding this $495 procedure.
His mother says “I feel so bad my baby is in pain, and I hope his fingers will be better after this operation.”

Rith underwent burn scar release surgery so he can use his fingers easily again.
Last December, Rith grabbed a hot pot and burned his left fingers. His parents took him to a clinic for medical care, and he received wound dressing. However, he developed a scar contracture after his burn healed.
Rith was very brave in the hospital and made several new friends as he underwent treatment. Surgeons repaired the painful skin contractures on his fingers and replaced the dead skin with a skin graft. Rith remained at the hospital to make sure the grafts were successful and took antibiotics to decrease the risk of re-infection; now he has returned home. His mother worked with the physiotherapy team for rehabilitative range of motion exercises and strengthening of his fingers, which he will start as soon as the incision is healed. As a toddler, it is important to physically keep up with children his age to avoid social stigmas, and he is fortunate that this surgery will allow him to do that. The surgeons look forward to seeing him again to determine if any further care is needed.
Rith’s mother said: “I was feeling so bad that Rith’s fingers would never be normal after his accident, but now I have hope he will have a good hand and be like other children. We are very grateful for your help.”
