Cindy is an eleven-year-old girl who lives with her family in rural Guatemala. Cindy’s father works driving a taxi, and her mother sells tortillas and takes care of the family’s household needs.
Cindy was born with her feet adhered to her spine. At nine days old, she underwent surgery to fix this problem. She was then diagnosed with spina bifida. Unfortunately, Cindy’s family did not have the money to pay for further medical attention.
Because Cindy cannot walk, she uses a wheelchair to move around. However, her wheelchair is now rusting and does not function. Cindy has no way to get around and participate in daily activities. Cindy’s family cannot afford to buy a wheelchair despite the dramatic improvement in life it could provide for her.
Fortunately, with the help of our medical partner, Wuqu’ Kawoq, Cindy is scheduled to receive a new wheelchair on March 31. $327 of Watsi funding will provide a wheelchair for Cindy that allows her to leave home and move around with ease. She will be able to participate in community life and play with her friends.
